Good decongestant for 6mo?

Please could someone recommend a decongestant that actually works for my 6mo DS?

He's had a cold for the past couple of days (one of many) but he seems particularly chesty this time - nose is v snotty, v chesty cough and his chest sounds and feels rattley when he breathes.

Am going to Boots later so will see what they say, but wondered if anyone could recommend anything.

Thanks.

Vicks can be used from 6 months, and seems to help my ds a lot. My other top tip is a humidifier, a dry atmosphere definitely makes a chesty cough worse.

Thanks. I'll ask in Boots. I think my friend said she had tried some nose drops o her baby and they had little effect - not sure which ones they were though - so did you find that they worked?

If his breathing is rattly, watch out for croup. A humidifier is the best prevention for this.

Thanks Apuskidusky. We use baby Vicks and it does seem to help. Will try a humidifier too. Will prob go to the doctors if his chest gets worse, just to be on safe side (and to keep my mum happy!).

DD had a constant cold for last winter. I found that lifting the bed up one end and putting some eucalyptus oil on a tissue tied to her cot worked OK...well it helped her sleep anyway. Have you thought of cutting the dairy products? I have now done it and she is much less snotty.

silver28 · 20/10/2008 08:06

Thanks Mung. Am already tilting the cot and use baby vicks on his chest. Both seem to help but by early hours of morning he's quite congested.

he barely has any dairy - just had a couple of little stars yoghurts in his whole life!- but thanks for the suggestion. will bear it in mind for the future.

If you bf then you could cut the dairy from your diet. Hope he gets better soon.

hi you can cheaply get a saline solutionfrom chemist and i did find this ok, but what i worked out helped was putting a small (old) dish in dd's room well away from cot/bed adding a good dollop of snuffle babe or vicks and adding boiling water..it fills the room through the night with menthol and really helped..i also used to by the menthhol plug ins from boots but they were v.expensive and the vicks+biling water worked better..good luck

oh and another i use, you can buy like a wet wipe tub of menthol 'wipes' DONT WIPE WITH THEM!..thats just the description...then i put under dd's pillow, put at 6 months you could put a couple under mattress so not TOO strong..you can get these from chemsit and shops like home bargains for under £2.HTH

We bought a humidifier for dd1 when she was about this age, it was about £40 from Argos, and has been the best thing when dd's have had colds, I would recommend it.
