has just got antibiotics. can not get them into her. have tried spoon/syringe/bribing with choc buttons/diluting with milk. she clamps her mouth shut. tried in the bath tonight & she ended up spitting the majority of it out again & screaming. really unpleasant for us both. any ideas how I'm going to get the course into her?!

What ABs? What for?

If it is flucloxacillin go back and tell them to give her something else.
It tastes foul.isn't very effective when it is all over the sofa and there are others that will do the job.

I was complaining to my own GP about an out of hours GP who tried to prescribe it last weekend. He said they only use it because it is cheap, and there are always alternatives.

If it is not fluclox...then I don't think I can add anything to what you have tried.

no it's not that one....but can't remember the name. Its flurescent pink. Oh well my last trick is to try & do it when she's watching tv.......could be fun.

I know I am late replying to this but just to let you know that we had a similar problem with our DD. We could never get any medication into her and eventually hid it in yoghurts which she did not notice. She has grown out of this though and now at the age of 4 takes all medicine with no problems.Good luck!

I find mixing with jam quite helpful (although obv not ideal from point of view of sugar).

my method has always been to kneel on said child so their head is between my knees. Put syringe in to corner of mouth, squirt whilst simultaneously holding their nose. They have to swallow, usually because they are howling with rage, but it is far more important that they get the medicine.

ohdearwhatamess · 23/10/2008 19:35

I'd also mix with jam.

My GP advised not to put in yoghurt - reacts in some way to stop the ABs working properly. No idea if that is true or not though.

Now I know this will probably be frowned upon but we had same problem with DS and found the only way to "fool" him was to mix in a syringe with a bit of calpol (which he loved!).

Dd and me say big dramatic YUK after every syringeful/spoonful. Lots of sympathy and some milk to take the taste away.
