Panicking, DD got an appointment at hospital tomorrow....

Last week got told by doc that DD who is 2yrs has too many glands and needs urgent blood tests to find out why. So we have an appointment with the peads tomorrow, in outpatients though.

Am on my own all week. Starting to panic about tomorrow now. What if she has to stay in? How will I get her clothes etc? Im scared.

can you pack a small bag with a change of clothes should she have to stay in. Take a mobile and some cash.

Oh you poor thing. No advice, sorry. But lots of sympathy for you, you must be worrying terribly.

Pack PJs, clean knickers, toothbrush (for you too if you'd stay with her)
Something to keep her amused

Packed lunch.
Change for the car park

I've just been through an unplanned hospital stay with DS2. I knew which way the day was heading when we left for the GP so Ipacked in preparation. Left the overnight bag in the boot of the car and went to fetch it when needed. The packed lunch was an inspired decision!!

I didn't stay woth DS2 (he's 7) so I was able to bring in clean PJs & clothes and more stuff the next day.

if they are doing blood tests tomorrow it is unlikely they will ask you to stay. the docs have let you be at home all week with no problem, so whatever it is, is unlikely to mean an immediate hospital stay...
it's not nice to be waiting for diagnosis though - sending calm vibes and hopefully a simple answer. hope tomorrow is not as stressful as you expect xx

This is good advice about taking stuff with you because if nothing else it is going to help you feel more in control. Get a good nights sleep if you can and eat a proper breakfast. I know how frightening this sort of thing can be but you have to keep yourself well and in good shape for your dd. Take a notepad with you and write things down so you can refer back. Ask the consultant what phone number you can reach him on and if he will do e-mails with you - then when you get home and think of stuff you will know how to get in touch. Breathe deeply and remember - you are taking your daughter to see someone who specialises in helping children all day long - and that is what he or she will do for your child too.

Thanks ladies.

I have to leave before 8am to do school run and drop DD1 off then have the appointment at hospital.

If i didnt pack an over night bag would I be allowed to take her home and get one or would she stay on her own? I cant leave her. Also have the dilema of getting DD1 picked up if there are any problems........... Im just panicking about these things, Im sure she wont stay in and it will all be fine!

The notepad is a good idea as I know i will miss things or wont understand things.

It's very unlikely I think that they'll want her to stay in but if it's easier for you all they may do tests tomorrow to save you having to go back. Therefore I would have a think tonight and see if there is friend you could ring at short notice to pick up dd1 should it be needed. You don't want to be clock watching and rushing.

Even if she had to stay in the ward will have stuff - like toothbrushes etc and something for her to wear. You on the other hand would be left in what you stand up in

If they admitted her from outpatients I imagine you would have time to go home for stuff - it takes them a while to organise a bed and admission sometimes!

They don't usually expect you to go to an outpatient appointment prepared with overnight stuff, so don't panic.

One other thing, the health books, I took dd to docs last week and left it with them, completely forgot to get it today and now wondering if I need to take it or will they have records, I know the doc photocopied her weight charts as she is skinny. The surgery wont open until after I have left for school and cant really come all the way back home again (17 miles back) to pick it up or should I? Will they need it?

Pack a bag now and have it ready, then you don't have to worry about it. Pack everything now so you don't have to worry about it.

Friends are fab in times like this. I had to abandon BabyDragon at someone's house at short notice, arrange for DS1 to be delivered to a party and get someone else to drop off his sleepover bag at the party boy's house. No one batted an eyelid at being asked at all.

All the stuff about her birth etc they should be able to get - easily if its the smae hospital where she was born. The weight etc will be useful but it sounds like your GP has already sent that stuff on with the referral. Presumably you know roughly when she's hit milestones etc so can pass that on if it's wanted. I don't think you need to go back - if they're deperate they can always fax it through a page at a time.

They might ask if you have it - but thinking logically theres nothing in there that they can't get if needed.
BTW it might be worth asking the doctor if they will send you a copy of the letter they will be writing to the GP. All GPS are communicated with by consultants in this way - it's perfectly routine - but as it's there you might as well have a copy and then you'll have a record of their views and any forthcoming actions. Some don't like to this (old fashioned types) but most will so it's worth asking. Some doctors even write direct to you and just copy the GP in!

Hi everyone. Thanks for being so supportive last night!

Saw paedetritian and she isnt concerned about the glands. She had a blood test done which was ok! Had a play therapist in to distract her but she cried abit and was very good. Just have to wait for the results, although hopefully everything will be fine.
