chronically swollen tonsils - home remedies

fishperson · 12/10/2008 09:01

My DD aged 10 has had chronically swollen tonsils for over a year. Doc says it's not unusual (evidence of a past infection and a sign that they are doing their job) and they will probably shrink back to normal size by the time she is 15!

She doesn't have tonsilitis, nor redness/pus/severe pain, but every day it is uncomfortable and we medicate with honey and lemon drinks and soluable vit C. It's annoying but not distressing.

Does anyone have any advice for other home remdeies or ways of managing this condition please?

eating plenty of leeks and watercress sage and pineapple

I melt a knob of butter & a marshmallow in the microwave, then lick if off a spoon. It's very comforting for a srcatchy throat

Sipping Manuka honey off a spoon might help - do not put it in hot water as it kills the antiviral/antibacterial element of it.

Thanks for the tip about the Manuka honey! I bought it specially but have been using it for DD in a warm drink. Will now give it to her via the spoon.

DD has recurrent moderately high temperatures with mild headache and uncomfortable throat (she has chronically enlarged tonsils but not tonsilitis). This has gone on sporadically for about 6 months. GP not fussed about it. Any suggestions or advice please? She's off school (again!!) today, feeling floppy. I assume it just viral but why does it just keep on going on?

Poor thing - you could try Echinacea to try help her to fight it off and boost her immune system. If you don't want to go that route then maybe a course of multivitamins might help. My DD had very large tonsils which eventually got smaller so it does happen!

Yes, reassuring to hear that tonsils do eventually shrink down but my GP says that this may only happen when she's 15!!!!

Tbh if the gp told me they were only going to shrink by the time my dd 15. I'd ask to be referred to ENT specialist and consider getting them removed.

Gargle with sage; you can get sage tea bags or else just make a brew the old fashioned way, strain the sage out and then gargle with teh water.
