This is a weird one. DD2's navel is red and sore-looking- any suggestions?

Noticed this while changing her nappy (she's 12 months.)

The whole of her belly button area looks inflamed. I put some Sudocrem on it for want of any better idea and shw wriggled as if it was sore to touch.

Anyone experienced this or have an idea what it might be (thrush or similar crossed my mind)?

It could be an infection in the skin (cellulitis), I think the umbilical area would be healed over at this age so I don't think it would be anything to do with this so it's more likely to be an infection in the skin. I would take her to the GP or give NHS direct a call.

Sounds like a fungal infection. Ask your pharmacist tomorrow to recommend something, maybe Fucidin or Daktarin.

It's most likely fungal, belly buttons can get a bit sweaty - but you need to take her to the GP to be sure because while you can get lamosil over the counter to treat it, you need to be sure it's not something more serious. In the meantime you could try applying sudocrem to keep the area clean. Is it itchy at all?

oh thank you

would the pharmacy prescribe for a 1-year old?

Well my local pharmacist is fab for advice etc so hopefully yours will be able to advise something suitable.

Not normally, it needs a GP to check and probably swab the area for infection.

Yes, I agree with WMMC and get the area swabbed on Monday if you can get an appt. It's a good idea to try to start some treatment over the w/end if you can though.
