He has been prone to rashes since he was small and none of them have ever seemed to be anything serious. We keep an eye, dose with Piriton and they have gone within a day or so.

DS1 woke up with a rash this morning and actually complained about it at school enough for them to put wet paper towels on him to help with the itching. We went and got some Priton straight away and he is fine in himself but complaining it is itching still.

Not unduly worried but would appreciate any thoughts please. TIA.

BTW It is on his front and back and was on his arms this morning. Sort of blotchy spots and a little bit raised.

If it responds to Piriton it sounds allergy related... but blotchy and raised also sounds a bit like hives (looks like nettle rash).

If it's hives(AKA Urticarial Rash) it can be caused by a variety of things... I developed this for the first time last year post some antibiotics... but the doctor said it can be caused by food intolerances amongst other things.

I got my worst outbreaks since then from cheese, chocolate & citrus... all c's which I thought was weird. The rash comes up suddenly and if I scratched it the blotches joined up and made bigger blotches. Then over a few hours it would just die down and maybe come up somewhere else! Never my face though... everywhere else... but mainly my chest, neck, arms, stomach & back...

Type hives/urticarial rash into google and you'll see how common it is. The doctor percribed me anti-histamines to help with the itchyness. Unfortunately I found only way to lessen the attacks was to steer clear of the 3 c's....

He had urticaria one time we had been to the park when he was about 2-3 years.

The rash started this morning, he woke up with it.

He has always been a good eater and eats a good variety of foods. Would it have been something he ate yesterday if it is food related?

I bake with chocolate and they occasionally have it to eat but not often, not even every week. He had a stage of eating lemon peel but that was a while ago and he isn't a big cheese eater.

It was hard listening to him crying a bit about it tonight saying it itched. He hasn't been that bad before. We plan to wake him at 9pm to give him another dose of Piriton.

My doc told me after getting urticaria you can be prone to attacks of it for up to another 10yrs!

When my rashes broke out it was usually quite quick... within an hour of eating prob food. Even when I cut out all prob foods... Rash still broke out with heat and if my clothing got tight anywhere. eg waitband etc.

I also had to change my clothes washing liquid... and we were on fairy non bio already!

It's possible he slept through the initial breakout and only after getting up (when he got warmed up) it felt itchy.

He wasn't wearing any new clothes recently was he? Our DS has had the odd rash when he's worn something new for the 1st time that I hadn't got round to washing first...

The only new thing is a coat and he has worn it for a couple of weeks and it was washed last week.

It sounds like it is just something he will get. Is it a problem?

I suppose it will only be a problem if it interferes with DS life.

To put your mind at rest I would take him to the doc when the next outbreak occurs... he/she might have some useful suggestions... esp as to what exactly the rash is and possible causes...

I have just had to go into school to give him another dose of Piriton. It is all over his front and back, arms and a bit on his face. I am ringing the GP as soon as they open at 2 to try and get an appointment.

Eventually got to see the out of hours service and it is a viral rash. It is his bodies way of saying he has something wrong apparently. I guess he has a good immune system if nothing else is wrong with him.

Ah! My son finn has had one of those too... it was at the end of a bug. The doctor said bugs can end up with a rash just before it works its way out of his system... a relief to know it's not going to be an ongoing thing phew!

ImnotMamaGbutsheLovesMe · 11/10/2008 17:58

He has had the same before but it was very strange as he hasn't been ill! No cough, cold, etc. DS2 has been poorly but not DS1.

weird... DS2 gets the bug and DS1 gets the rash! Well at least it should go... is it any better now?

ImnotMamaGbutsheLovesMe · 12/10/2008 09:04

He's still got the rash but has stopped complaining.
