dds toes cross over

ilovetochat · 08/10/2008 15:25

I took dd (15months) to be weighed today as she lost weight last time and has to be monitored cos she is small. Anyway, they asked if i had any concerns and i mentioned her toes, on both feet the 2nd toe seems to be higher on her foot and crosses over the 3rd toe slightly, it has become more noticeable now she walks. They told me to keep her bare footed as much as possible, which i always have, and have referred her to a specialist. Now i am panicking, what will they do to her. My mom has had to have her toes straightened and had pins through each toe. They wouldn't do this to a child would they? OMG

My dd2 has this!

I mentioned it to my hv at her 18-month check and was told not to worry.

Now I am worried by your post because I've done nothing about it and she's nearly 6. I have to say, it doesn't bother her and she says they don't hurt.

Will watch replies with interest - has anybosy else left it alone?

ilovetochat · 08/10/2008 15:33

hv said it could damage her 3rd toes being walked on and toenails dig in a bit.

Funnily enough, her toenail always grows fastest/longest on that one underneath toe so I regularly make sure it's trimmed short.

Are you seeing an orthopaedic specialist?

tweetyfish · 08/10/2008 15:39

My DD also has this, and I too was told not to worry... She's nearly 4 now. She's not bothered by it either and all i've done really is keep her out of sandals where she would have to grip with her toes.

Please let us know what they say!

ilovetochat · 08/10/2008 15:42

will do, i've got to wait for an appointment so could be a while. she walks fine and doesn't seem to be in pain so i'm hoping they will just monitor it. i've been trying for 2 days to cut her toenails but even in her sleep she yanks her foot away, i'm wondering now if it does hurt her?

Her toenail on the bottom toe is always brittle and grows fast too.
DD saw a physio when she was 18 months as her ankle was very weak, and she never mentioned anything (and looked closely at her feet when she was walking etc, so would have seen it)

tweetyfish · 08/10/2008 15:44

Is she ticklish? My ds hates having his toenails cut, it's almost a reflex to yank his feet away

Ellbell · 08/10/2008 15:46

My dd is 8 and has this, but with her 4th toe crossing over the third one quite badly and then the little toe crossing (but less noticeably) over the 4th. Mentioned it to doctor at one of her check-ups and he said not to worry, just to keep her toe-nails short so they don't rub. It hasn't bothered her at all, though she also has odd feet in the sense that one is a whole size smaller than the other!

ilovetochat · 08/10/2008 15:54

she is a bit ticklish and when awake she won't let me near her nails, little madam

Hi there. My DD who is 2 has had this. I mentioned it to about 4 months ago and she referred us. We saw the specialist and said it's nothing to worry about, same thing as you with those 2 toes. She also checked DD1 toes and hers are similar. Specialist said it could be hereditry. She said i could tape the toes together to help straighten them. Having said that though the past couple of months they have got alot better and barely do it and I have forgotten to tape them together!

ilovetochat · 13/11/2008 14:39

update - dd has got an appointment with a specialist 30th dec so we will see.

My neice has this, she's almost 12 & they don't bother at all. she's a real tomboy, alwys out playing football or on her bike! absolutely no problems. My ds was born with the same & all t midwife said was "whose got the wonky toes" it would seem that they do run in families! it was only because of this that we found out about my neice!

MrsThierryHenry · 14/11/2008 17:27

My DS has this (age 2) though it's only appeared since wearing shoes - maybe 6 months or so after we first got him shoes. It seems to be the cause in his case but I keep meaning to take him to a podiatrist. Am interested to watch this thread.

Fennel · 14/11/2008 17:30

My dd3 had this, from birth. She actually had an operation to make them cross over less, when she was 2.5. Because they were rubbing and getting blisters from her shoes.

Now she has it less, she's 4.5, but still it's noticeable. It's possible she'd need another operation but we'd be reluctant.

None of the rest of us have wonky toes, it's just her.

NorbertDentressangle · 14/11/2008 17:36

DS (4) has this problem.

We've see a paediatric podiatrist every 4/5 months for the last 18months /2 years(referred by HV when I pointed out the problem)

It seems that its a common problem and in most cases doesn't cause any problems providing the nail isn't rubbing the other toe IYSWIM.

The podiatrist did make DS some toe props to wear during the day which he did for about 9 months but TBH they didn't really make a difference.

She then gave us some tape to try strapping them (she said this was optional) but we've not done it as its just too fiddly and time-consuming first thing in the morning .

Surgery is apparently only done in extreme cases and tends to happen when the child is in their early teens she said

NorbertDentressangle · 14/11/2008 17:38

oh, and the podiatrist said it can be hereditary or can happen in the womb if the baby is short of space or lying in such a way that the feet are squashed

ilovetochat · 14/11/2008 20:31

i've noticed it more since dd has walked but her toes have always stuck out too much (up in the air iyswim) and her nails can rub the toe above.

ilovetochatupsanta · 30/12/2008 18:22

have been to the podiatrist today and she said dd's toes aren't too bad but gave us the tape to taoe them up at night and it may improve them. we have to go back in 6 months to be checked. she wasn't worried at all and said it could rectify itself as the toe bones strengthen.
told her about our troubles getting clarks shoes to fit as dd has a high instep and the toes sticking up need lots of room and she suggested another shoe store which we will try next time.

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 30/12/2008 18:27

My DD has crossed over toes - the little on crosses over the fourth one. She is now almost 12 and very little has changed since infancy.

She will not be able to model sandals, but other than that, it causes her no problems.

PrincessJas · 14/05/2011 10:14

Hi all,

I know this is an old thread, but I as my son seems to have crossed toes, I was wondering if anyone knew of any shoes shops (other than Clarks) that offered shoe fitting (and wider fits).

Many thanks :0
