ds has croup and im worried about his breathing, its quite laboured and sounds a bit like someone having an asthma(sp?) attack. he's like this even when resting.

i dont know if i should be worried or what!

what do i do?????????

if you are worried about his breathing he needs to be checked.

How fast is he breathing? Normally between 2-40 per min. If more than this worth checking.

Is teh skin betwen his ribs, or that dimply patch between the ollar bones going in when he breathes.

Both of these are key signs to get checked.

most importantly though if you are concerned take him to GP/walk-in centre.

DraculaNeedsArteries · 08/10/2008 12:57

normal breathing between 20*-40!!!

avenanap · 08/10/2008 12:57

If you are worried take him to A&E. Trust your instincts. If you feel that he's not right then get him seen. With asthma they wheeze. He should be able to talk to you if he's old enough without stopping to take breaths. How old is ds? Have you filled the bathroom with steam? Is he distressed?

Hassled · 08/10/2008 12:58

Go get him checked out - it's one of those things you don't dither about. He might need some stuff to open the airways more.

froggyfroofroo · 08/10/2008 13:00

sorry, should have said in op, he's 7 months.

his breathing is a bit faster than normal, no sign of skin between ribs going in, but its diffuiclt to count because he breaks off to have a cry or whinge

Does he have a bark cough? Blue lips and inside mouth? Fever?

If you are concerned then get him checked. Trust your instinct. Take him to A&E if you think he's not breathing properly.

We were at the hospital with croup on Sat night the leaflet they gave us says.

When should I seek medical help?

-Drooling with difficulty swallowing
-Difficulty/noisy breathing
-Difficulty speaking
-High fever
-Increased tiredness
-If you are worried.

They gave DS steroids. It made quite a big difference pretty quickly.

I would say if you're worried get him checked.(We have been back to the GP twice since then!)

Hope all goes well.

froggyfroofroo · 08/10/2008 13:10

bloody GP's closed for lunch

he has a barky cough
drooling, but could be teething
noisy, gasping breathing
no fever, he seems quite chirpy.

go to A&E?? i wish i could get hold of mum to listen to his breathing down the phone, im really not sure if im being a panicky first time mum.

TAKE HIM TO A&E AND GET HIM CHECKED!

CicatrickOrTreat · 08/10/2008 13:12

Ring NHS 24/NHS Direct? They could probably tell by listening to his cough if you should go to A&E?

avenanap · 08/10/2008 13:14

NHS Direct will all an ambulance if you tell them his symptoms. Seriously.

geekgirl · 08/10/2008 13:14

f he's quite chirpy he's probably ok, but I would get him checked out at a&e - it'll be quiet at this time of day and he's still so little.
IME croup gets much worse during the night, so it might be worth having him looked at now (rather than at 1am IYSWIM).

froggyfroofroo · 08/10/2008 13:17

omg, got hold of mum and she said get to hospital too.

phoning dh to come home and take me to A&E.

thanks ladies.

Phone an ambulane if he's gasping for breath, they will be quicker and can give him some treatment when they get there.

pagwatch · 08/10/2008 13:23

I have been to hosp several times with this with DD - they would always prefer you go in rather than wait.
Get him to hosp...

2point4kids · 08/10/2008 14:53

I took my 7 month old to the GP yesterday for the same reason.
He's on a steroid inhaler now and a reliever inhaler and is slowly improving today.
My 3 year old also has croup (gets it fairly often with the asthma) and needs the inhalers to help it always too.
Its definitely worth getting it checked out.

froggyfroofroo · 08/10/2008 15:57

well, dh thought A&E was a bit dramatic so we went to gp when they opened, ds did his usual trick of looking the picture of health but we have some steroids now so hopefully that will work.

we have been told to go to A&E if his breathing gets worse in the night.

My son had croup when he was 11 months. I had taken him to the Docs where of course he perked up and she wasnt sure what was wrong. In the afternoon, thou, 10 mins into his nap he woke up having difficulty breathing and his ribs were going sort of in and out. I phoned the GP who took one look at him and sent him to the hospital where he had to stay for 3 days. His twin brother then caught it off him but wasnt nearly so bad thou and didnt need hospital admisssion. Hope your ds will be ok. xx

CicatrickOrTreat · 09/10/2008 10:02

Hope your little one is better today. DS went back to nursery yesterday and was in fine form, and eating like a horse!

Hope he is ok today - my ds has had it a few times - sometimes gets steroids and last time didnt - we put damp towels in his room at night and it helps. He will probs have a nasty cough for a week or so now as it irritates the wind pipey thingy.
