As we all know now tends to be when the asthma kicks off worst so thought we could all have a thread going where we can chat about different things...

My dd1 is asthmatic and is 2.9yrs old, started with breathing issues at 3wks old and was officially diagnosed last october. She has been admitted too many times to remember from asthma attacks/respiritory issues. She is currently on 4mg montelukast, 5ml cetrizine antihistamine, clenil modulite 100 2 puffs morning and night, salbutamol when required

How is everyone doing?
DS2 had a bad few weeks, but seems to be on the up again now.
I had a proper sleep last night, as I didn't feel I had to keep an ear out for him wheezing.
(Drinking wine helped too. )

cmotdibbler · 09/11/2008 20:57

Wheeze, cough, cough, puke.... And the antibiotics are luminous yellow so have stained the carpet where DS (2.5) has either puked them up or spat them out. Have been reduced to pausing Fireman Sam until they are taken properly. Chest infection seems to be clearing, but we really need to go back and get his routine medication changed as I'm still feeling very fobbed off and with no escalation plan

Saturn74 · 09/11/2008 21:40

Bless him.
Hope he's better soon.

We're at the point where I'm getting very anxious that we're left with nothing but massive doses of prednisolone when DS2 goes downhill.
He's had far more than the recommended number of doses this year.

The doctor's response was "better he has the steroids, and actually keeps breathing".

Bainmarie · 09/11/2008 21:47

A great idea to start a thread on this.
DS1 just admitted to hospital with asthma attack last Monday, he gets a viral wheeze too. He seems ok now, still has lovely yellow antibiotics to take. Will be looking out for fish oils to try him with too, thanks for tip!
hpgoneforgood Bribery is my only suggestion for making steriods more palateable.

hpgoneforgood · 01/12/2008 14:24

Thought I would bump this thread again too see how everybodies DCs are coping in this cold weather. DD is struggling again in the mornings - PF down by 10-20%, looking at GP visit again, she seems to be worse this winter and here I was hoping she would grow out of it.

cheekysealion · 01/12/2008 14:36

hi all great thread i have learnt loads from it

DD2 -5 has asthma.... does anyone know if storage heaters affect her breathing, as when i turn them on for the winter she gets much much worse... the dust they seem, to produce is unbeliveable....

wellieboot · 03/12/2008 13:57

Hi there, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question about storage heaters, but am having asthma type problems here too. DD(23 months) hasn't been officially diagnosed but after a rough few months with every sniffle going straight to her chest the docs are talking about it. We are very familiar here with the vile yellow antibiotics! DD is having an xray tomorrow to check for pneumonia and the dr said it is likely he will put her on the 'preventer' inhaler when we go back next week. Will this help to stop all these chest infections? It sounds silly but I would love for DD to get a 'normal' cold! You know, a sniffle for a few days, better by the weekend, that sort of thing!

ilovemydog · 03/12/2008 14:09

Wow - great idea for a thread

Didn't know there was a difference between wheezing and coughing...

DD is 2.4 and has been admitted a few times to Children's Hospital with asthma.

The GP said what's scary about her asthma is that she deteriorates very rapidly , and looks fine. Last time the GP called an ambulance after taking her 02 levels...

She's on a preventer now (dark brown one) which I thought was too much steroids, but saw the asthma nurse in clinic yesterday and her dose has been reduced to 2 puffs a day...

snowcrystal · 05/12/2008 00:00

Hi everyone just found this thread
ds2 has asthma ,eczema ,rhinitis, gets wheezy with colds, exercise and animalsetc.
Read in med journal recently that wheezy children under 5 can be either those with wheezy bronchitis and no eczema or other allergies;or those who do have atopy like eczema rhinitis etc.
The ones without other allergies tend to grow out of it after 5 yrs ;the ones with them developed longer term asthma.Only one study of course.
Hazeyjane can relate to hyper running about behaviour when wheezy even b4 inhalers!
Interested how kids cope with football etc.
Sending support to all those mums coping with this

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 07/12/2008 02:22

having a bad time again here..dd1 has been in hospital most of the day with more chest x rays, steroids etc. Currently sitting on couch watching charlie and lola because she is coughing and wheezing,,tis fun

ilovemydog · 07/12/2008 20:57

nemo - sorry about your DD - at what stage do they start taking x rays? My DD is a frequent flyer at the local Children's Hospital, and usually gets oxygen....

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 07/12/2008 21:02

my DD was diagnosed with Acute asthma at 16mths old is now 3.8yrs. Has an appointment for docs tomorrow as really bad cold, and very wheezy and crackly, constantly bringing up mucus from her chest. Has a chest infection esp in cold weather for practically whole of dec. has had previously bronchitus which ended up in hospital visit . she has both brown and blue inhalers, and we have steriods too.

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 07/12/2008 21:04

nemo same with my DD - i think we will be in for chest xrays etc tomorrow too.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 07/12/2008 21:09

ilovemydog dd1 has had about 8 chest xays so far and she is 3 next week. On one of her admittance to the ward they sent her down every day for one for 3 days running which seemed abit excessive to me

Themuppets hopedd feels a lot better soon..I really hate the winter as its a stressful time

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 07/12/2008 21:11

Nemo thanks.

I hope your DD gets better soon.

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 07/12/2008 21:11

alirobins · 07/12/2008 21:46

Ds is up and down at the moment nights are quite bad He has just finished another course of pred. They added flixotide back on top of his seretide to increase the steroids.
Doctors mentioned changing him to symbicort we go back in two weeks to see.

ilovemydog · 07/12/2008 22:08

Thanks nemo - DD has only ever been admitted overnight, so it sounds like x rays are for more serious cases?

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 07/12/2008 22:43

ilovemy I think dd1 tends to get them because her asthma breaks down very quickly from being stable to very wheezy. However it could just depend on which medic dr sees her..lol

ilovemydog · 07/12/2008 22:52

DD also deteriorates vv quickly and the GP said what scared him about DD's asthma is that she looks, 'deceiptively normal...'

Know what you mean about depends on which medic examines! The GP freaked and called 999 from the surgery, but the registrar thought she looked OK...

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 08/12/2008 11:07

DD has been to the docs this morning, has a tight chest and is very wheezy. snotty and allt he rest. if she doesn't drink today, we need to get her back to docs this afternoon and may resort into an overnight trip to hospital

ilovemydog · 08/12/2008 12:31

\Does it help it you give her a straw? For some reason, DD thinks it's a special occasion if she's given a straw!

Hope you manage to get soome fluids down!

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 08/12/2008 13:11

Shes got a special cup with spiral straw from Marwell Zoo. Shes had a little bit, and currently laid out on the sofa with her dog watching playhouse disney

weblette · 10/12/2008 19:35

We're just back from a review with the asthma nurse - ds2 (4) has had his first month of montukelast with 4 puffs of beclamethasone a day. It hasn't stopped him having an attack but his recovery was quicker.

The nurse also raised the issue of his growth. He was on the 70th centile before his wheezing got worse, now he's down round the 25th. Both his older sibs are 75th. We can't help feeling all the courses of prednisolone he's had have affected him

ilovemydog · 10/12/2008 22:26

weblette how many times has he been on steroids this year?

The Muppetts how is DD now?

Am hoping that the sniffle DD has doesn't escalate into a cold, asthma attack....
