Not pooed since at least last Wednesday.

Overflowing.

Lots of pain, refusal to use the loo.

Doc has prescribed lactulose today - 15 ml at 11am this morning, I shall give 15ml again in a minute.

Tried -

Bubble blowing
Feet high on a stool
Nintendo
Bribery
Cycling legs/rubbing tummy

It all started because he didn't want to poo at school (who can blame him - they are VILE) so now of course afraid.

Loads of water/fruit, cut right down on milk and cereal. No banana since Thursday.

How can I make help him to poo right now, tonight?

Please.

A few months ago my 3 yo ds didn't poo for 2 weeks. It was absoluetly awful. By the end of it he stopped eating and was sleeping alot except for when he was crying with pain. He was prescribed lactulose and senokot. neither of which worked. In the end it did take sevral glycerin suppositories to shift the hard stuff and once that had moved the senokot and lactulose had soften the rest so that was passed quite easily.

Once the intial backlog was shifted he was back to normal pretty quickly. You have my sympathies as I had a horrendous week when it was at it's worse. Dr said that if the suppositories didn't work it would have to be a hospital job.

I would try and get the suppositiories tonight from a late night chemist if you can, or if not get some tomorrow. Once we got one to stay in lng enough for it to melt, it worked pretty quickly.

KatyMac · 07/10/2008 07:59

how is he?

MUM23ASD · 07/10/2008 08:45

Guess who i thought of this morning??? Hope he's not hurting today.

Bridie3 · 07/10/2008 09:05

Apple juice is good for this.

Do any of your friends have a trampoline? It always works for me! At least, my rebounder does.

HowlingattheFullMOONMother · 07/10/2008 09:11

My DD suffering with constipation quite regularly at the moment, we're using the lactulose too.

What helps for her is a bowl of steaming hot water in the toilet pan, the steam helps to ease it out(obviously use a bowl you don't need anymore)

Gentle rocking whilst sitting on the toilet helps too, don't know how , but my Dm gave me that tip.

Hope he manages to go soon, I know DD gets a very sore tummy with this.

Buda · 07/10/2008 09:15

Oh bless him. Hope he manages to go today.

BibiThree · 07/10/2008 09:16

BALD, hope he shifts it soon, it sound truly awful for him (and you!)

DD gets constipated from time to time, although not that badly, but we find giving her a cup of warm water which she drinks fairly quickly can stimulate the bowel to get her going.

yomellamoHelly · 07/10/2008 09:33

We found a mix of apple juice and fennel tea kept things moving for ds1 once he'd had a clear out. For us the osteopath always did the trick. Tried getting him to take Lactulose, Senna and Movicol, but refused them all.
Prizes for poos were also very effective (but needed the apple juice mix to make it possible). Is there anything he'd love to have that might serve as bribery?

DesperateHousewifeToo · 07/10/2008 09:49

I seem to remember making apple flapjacks with flaxseeds in. They were pretty well disguised.

Hope things have 'moved'

KathG · 07/10/2008 13:46

once your poor ds is in a better state we have found that a really exhausting swimming lesson stop the problem returning - guaranteed my dd will need to go to the toilet during the lesson but its a small price to pay.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2008 17:37

Result !!we got glycerine suppositories from the pharmacist first thing this morning; Administered at 11 am - mega poo by 2pm.

good news - well done ds!

DesperateHousewifeToo · 07/10/2008 17:49

He must be much more comfortable now

Hope you can help him prevent it happening again.

Will remember the suppositries. Hopefully, won't need them again but good to add to the arsenal ('scuse the pun)

Spidermama · 07/10/2008 17:53

I make sure I have glucose supoositories in the house every time I give birth. They're the business.

I've just read this thread. What a relief.

Spidermama · 07/10/2008 17:53

I meant glycerine obviously.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2008 17:58

I had No Idea that such a thing existed, they are utterly marvellous.

is yours sweet enough already spidermama?

DraculaNeedsArteries · 07/10/2008 18:25

Well done little BALD.

Keep up with teh lactualose though to keep things moving for a few days...then wean him off rather than stopping abruptly.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2008 18:30

Thanks for that reminder, Dr said to wean off the lactulose slowly.

Oh good. Was wondering about him. Poor thing.

Grammaticus · 07/10/2008 18:47

Yes I was thinking of him too - glad to hear he's done the deed

munchkinmum · 07/10/2008 19:56

aww bless.... glad he is ok now. My mum had this when she had chemotherapy - she was in agony and very distressed. They treated her in hospital with suppositories - her earth moved within minutes IYKWIM!!
