Does everyone feel terrified at the thought of their child having a general anaesthetic?

Ds2 (2.5) is having a minor op on Thursday - grommets put in for glue ear. Both me and dh are terrified at the thought of the GA - what if something goes wrong? Are we being irrational? Does everyone feel like this? (I almost feel a bit guilty because I'm aware that many children and parents have much more serious ops/illnesses to cope with).

Please tell me I'm being silly, I wish Thursday had come and gone and everything is ok.

Aww, glad it went well snooks ( at least it's all over and done with). Was wondering how you got on.

ListersSister · 09/10/2008 22:49

Thanks for updating us Snooks - I was wondering how it went, but assumed you wouldn't be around on MN till tomorrow - big day and all that.

Glad it went well, and that your ds was back on form so soon!

So, how many times have you crept up to look at him this evening then ?

Hi Snooks - how is everything? How is your little DS? Have you seen a difference in his hearing yet?
My dd is in for her op tomorrow

RoRoMommy · 14/10/2008 14:42

Hi everyone! My DS (18m) has to go in for a dental procedure next week under GA and reading these posts made me feel so much better.

Can I just ask, has everyone on this post had the procedures and GA does in an NHS hospital? We're considering going private, and I just want to see what people's experiences are.

TIA

Hi snooks,
I just found this thread again but I have been thinking of you.

How is your DS now? I am glad that everything went as well as possible. I know what you mean about the image that will stay with you for ages. Thank heavens we have healthy children that don't need GA often...

What did you do with the baby in the end?

needmorecoffee · 15/10/2008 08:51

just read the OP. Hope everything went well. dd has had 4 GA's and I was petrified each time. She has another one coming up and it will be a regular thing,
RoRo, its all been NHS and all fine.

Well we are back from our little op this morning. All was well, and the hospital was fab - even had mini electric cars to drive down to theatre on! DD was not fazed by anything, and was only groggy for about 20 mins after the op. Is totally back to normal already.

Best of luck for those with ops still to come

Hi ListersSister - just seen this (sorry). Thank you for asking about ds

I am so pleased everything went well for your dd - bet you are so glad it's all over. Like you say - business as normal!

Cadmum- my mum came with us and looked after dd3. It was a private hospital and ds was the only child patient so as well as a room to ourselves to watch TV etc there was a big playroom at the end of the corridor, dd3 (6mths) obv wasn't much interested in the playroom and tbh ds2 just wanted to watch Thomas!

RoRoMummy - good luck for next week. I don't think there is any difference in the actual care of NHS v private care as far as my experience goes - I mean, our consultant operates both privately and through the NHS so in the end (waiting lists aside maybe) there is the same degree of care.

needmorecoffee - best of luck to your dd (you are a brave mummy) x
