Weird fevers

Yesterday my DD (nearly 2) was fine in the morning, then we went out and she suddenly got really tired and heavy eyed and was very peaky and unwell looking. She fell asleep when we got home and when she woke up was really flushed with a temp of 38.9C. I gave her Calpol and she had quite an unsettled night.

This morning she ate a full breakfast and seemed very happy and lively again, so we thought she was better and went out. In the middle of the afternoon she fell asleep and again when she woke she was very flushed, heavy eyed, unwell and burning up. She was really upset and whiny.

Then when we got home her temp was down to 37.4C and she seemed happy and bright again.

She has been drooling a lot and very chewy, so maybe getting back molars, but I would have thought 39C was a bit high a temp for teething?

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? And should I take her to see a doctor?

TIA

my DS does this and so do i

we both spike very high fevers after being fine and then settle down

it can last for a day or more

obv if you are worried i would call your GP

keep her dosed on nurofen and calpol as needed

Thanks!

Will see how she is tomorrow. Am just a bit worried that maybe its something she needs antibiotics for!!

well if it last more than a couple of days i would speak to your GP and if her temp gets really high then call NHS Direct

She wasn't over heated? You mentioned it was after you had been out?

Also just thinking about the Calpol and Nurofen......did you see the new advice on the news the other day?? It should only be used now if a fever is very high after 24 hours?

RubySlippers · 04/10/2008 19:36

can you link to that goldilocks - i personally wouldn;t leave a child with a fever for a day without medicating

i wouldn't leave myself like that

no, her temperature went up when inside and not dressed warmly. I hadn't read that- i would have thought a 39c temp needed treating but maybe I'm wrong

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-wellbeing/health-news/paracetamol-given-to-babies -is-linked-to-global-rise-in-asthma-935408.html

In short: A temp above 38.5 is ok to treat but long term use of Calpol is linked to Asthma. The GMTV doctor said that we can no longer be "Calpol happy".

I hope she is ok and feels better soon

thanks, will be sparing with it

sometimes its better to think of the fever in a positive way and rember its the bodies way of trying to kill off bugs. if it persists see someone tomoorrow/monday.

RubySlippers · 04/10/2008 21:09

thanks goldilocks - will have a read

It might be a mild case of roseola. My DD (18 months) also had a 39 degree temp. this week from about 4pm onwards for two days in a row. The morning in between she was absolutely fine. Then she had another clear day and came out in a rash the next day. I think roseola takes various forms.

If it lasts more than two days I'd go to the doctors' though, as the others said. There's a chance a persistent unexplained fever is a UTI (DD had one at 13 months).

Thanks vesela. From what I have read it seems exactly like roseola, but no rash yet..she is wondering why I keep lifting up her top to check her tummy!

No fever this morning but she still doesn't look well and is much more grumpy than usual so will be expecting one later I think!

Will take her to doctors tomorrow morning if it happens again today!!
