I can understand that this must be worrying harman. I'm afraid I have no advice to give, but I hope that it all turns out to be nothing. Has ths dr given you any ideas as to what is causing it ?

castille · 04/10/2008 12:02

No knowledge or advice, just huge sympathy.

I hope you get a swift referral. How old is he?

Ah poor little chap. And poor you.

I hope it's nothing as sinister as you fear (and we all fear the absolute worst in such a situation) and can be sorted out/treated quickly.

I hope you're seen v soon.

Winetimeisfinetime · 04/10/2008 14:36

Yes I hope you get it resolved for your ds asap too.

I don't have any knowledge to offer re epilepsy except that both my mil and bil have it in a mild form but once diagnosed it was very successfully controlled and does not really affect their lives at all.

Pheebe · 04/10/2008 18:05

Not sure if this is any reassurance but epilepsy can take many many different forms. Seizures can be weird to say the least especially in children and as other posters have said can generally be controlled. It won't stop your mind whirring off to the worst case scenario though, going through soemthing similar with our DS2 (he's had a couple of 'fits' recently but had a clear EEG) and we're waiting to see the consultant. We're finding we're over-watching him and reading way too much in to every little thing he does. If you've been referred already, call the paeds office and tell them about the speech in the mornings and see if you can get a quicker appointment.

The eye rolling sounds like the petit mal absences my brother had when he was young - probably about that age, actually. He has epilepsy but it has been well controlled for years (he's now 32) apart from glitches when his medication has been adjusted and it's not worked out, or when he's done something stupid (gone short on sleep and drunk too much).

The speech in the mornings might be related - a number of times, DB's fits have taken place on waking, I think there's something in that transition from sleep to wakefulness. As Pheebe says, epilepsy takes many different forms, so it's possible these episodes are small seizures in their own right.

Obviously it could turn out to be something completely different - but I wanted to give you some reassurance that if it is epilepsy it doesn't have to be a dreadful thing. And it's good that he's been referred - we had a long stressful period when my dad thought DB's eyerolling was some annoying habit, and used to have such a go at him, and then we all discovered the poor kid couldn't help it.

It would be really helpful to your paed if you could film him, sounds awful I know

Oct 16th not too long to wait and the tests usually follow quite quickly. The EEG is a very simple test, all they do is glue some sticky pads on his head and then he has to lie quietly for about 20 minutes or so. With DS2 (11 months) they gave him melatonin which is a natural 'sleep' hormone so he dozed right through it. Not sure if they do same with older children but it doesn't hurt in any way and the 'glue' is more like a thick paste so comes straight off.

Our paed appointment isn't til the 4th November. We went through A&E though and his were so dramatic, so got the test done quicker. He does seem to be dipping his head every so often though and looking at us through the top of his head. We did think it was cute til now but now wondering if they're something to?... Anyway, 2 weeks tomorow with no more 'fits' so we'll see.

harman, DB was always completely away with the fairies during petit mal, but I have no idea whether that is typical or not.

Harman - if you can it would be a good idea to video him before the appointment. Hope you can get to the bottom of it.

I'm not an epilepsy expert, the nearest thing in this house to one of those is upstairs in bed with a bug.

I do however know a but about it from DH. epilepsy can take many different forms. From experience with DH when coming around from a fit the sufferer will be disorientated, slurry speech, tired, confused.

DH doesnt have mild epilepsy. He has the big seizures and cannot be roused. But the dog (sorry for comparing your ds to a dog btw) does have small seziures and does respond to touch, voice etc when having seizures which often go unnoticed by me. Her eyes roll and thngs and the vet and DH both say this is epilepsy.

Once diagnosed it can be easily controlled.

Hope all goes well. email me if you like and I'll get DH to reply when he is feeling better. He knows loads more about epilepsy, diagnoses, treatment etc than I do.

this does sound like absence sezuires but best to get and ecg done as soon as you can, badger the hospital for an appointment say you will take a cancellation if you can - many people cancel the day before and appointments go unfilled.
