Nature Babycare - Eco and baby friendly??

Lotster · 03/10/2008 15:49

Anyone know these products? As well as nappies they also sell baby washes and shampoos etc. Apparently "The whole approach behind Nature babycare is natural"..

Maybe I am being unreasonable but when I buy a products that sells itself as eco friendly, gentle to babies and natural, I do NOT expect the second largest ingredient to be Sodium Laureth Sulfate - a highly irritating chemical.

I am always seeing these products stocked in the natural sections at chemist, next to truly paraben free products and it makes me mad

if you want to know more about parabens etc here's a post by someone else on another board which sums up the horror's pretty well:

I tried the nappies vos I got bored of changing my baby due to leaking 'real' nappies but wanted to make an effort to be eco-friendly. I abandoned them after one pack cos they were just as bad for leaking and therefore not worth t he effort/ additional cost. I am now using normal nappies and trying harder to turn the lights off

EachPeachPearMum · 03/10/2008 20:46

I think it depends on the shape of your baby- we have used nature nappies for DD since 2 mo- and she hasn't leaked once!
The nappies have a high maize content, and biodegrade, which surely is better than 'plastic' type disposable?
I don't use the wipes though, or any baby toiletries, so have never looked at the ingredients.

barking · 03/10/2008 20:50

I also second EachPeachPearMum's recommendation - Nature boy and girl nappies are fab. Have used them for all 3 of my chlldren and they don't leak.

littlepig · 03/10/2008 20:54

My DS managed to get one to leak right through the nappy and not out of the sides (and this was not because I left him in it all day...)

spicemonster · 03/10/2008 20:58

They don't make shampoos or baby washes though

spicemonster · 03/10/2008 20:58

And no, they don't leak on my DS either - they are all I've ever used

IlanaK · 03/10/2008 20:59

I find they don't leak much - just the occasional one. They are certainly better than huggies. However, I question how eco-friendly they are. I have tried about 5 different brands of eco friendly nappies and my current favourite is Earth Friendly Baby. They are american and I get them from my local health food shop so not sure if anyone else can get them, but they are unbleached and fit really well.

hannahsaunt · 03/10/2008 21:02

I use them and love them with ds3. No leaking probs that I can think of.

NotAnOtter · 03/10/2008 21:08

they do leak

elkiedee · 03/10/2008 21:17

I like the nappies and wipes because they don't smell of as many chemicals as most brands. The wipes are expensive though so we tend to get other cheaper ones in fragrance free (which still smell more than the NB ones) as well. The nappies aren't the cheapest but they're not that expensive. We also buy the nappy bags but only tend to use them for stinky nappies, or away from home, not for ones that are just wet. Lots of nappy bags make me sneeze.

We started off with some called Tushies which sound as though they're much more ecologically pure, but they're really expensive and not that easy to get hold of, though the main stockist has a shop near where dp has work meetings at least a couple of days a week.

Lotster · 03/10/2008 21:40

It's not the nappies I have a problem with though, I have heard they're good, it's the baby washes and shampoos..

This is what they look like, or one of them:

Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are not the same thing. There's no real scientific evidence that parabens are harmful but I agree that they're not natural

Lotster · 04/10/2008 11:00

Yes is seems Lauryl is the slightly less ominous cousin of Laureth, but it's the Laureth sulfate in these prodcuts.

I've actually sent them an email as I read a research in to them which said they are not harmful as long as a product contains less than 2%. However in Nature babycare washes ist's the second largest ingredient... [hmmm]

It's amazing what it perhaps morally wrong (i.e. "natural" baby washes contain chemicals which are so hotly debated) and yet perfectly legal.

Wow, well I unexpectedly got the following reply from Nature Babycare which I'm really pleased with!

My email:

Hello there,

I wondered if you could address a concern for me please?

I have read on you packaging of baby washes that "The whole approach behind Nature Babycare is natural"

Yet when I read the list of ingredients, I find the second largest is Sodium Laureth Sulfate.

Your product packaging leads the consumer to believe they are buying an environment and baby-friendly product, one would assume this means it is free of parabens and petro-chemicals, yet it is not.

Whilst I am aware that SLS often unfairly scape-goated as a cancer risk, it is certainly and irritating and unpleasant chemical.
From my understanding SLS is safe only when a product contains less than 2%, so as it is you second largest ingredient, how can it be a baby friendly product? And how can you be so deliberately misleading?

Their reply:

Dear Madam,

Thanks for your email.
You are right in your claims.
We have developed new formulas without SLS and Parabens which will be on sale in January 2009.
The new formulations have been approved by the Swedish society of nature conservation.
Keep your eyes opened!
Kind regards,

NATY AB

Very interesting, Lotster, I haven't used their washes as they include SLS but perhaps I would next year. I prefer Halos and Horns as they are nasty-free, smell fab and are really cheap.

FWIW I found the Nature Boy Girl nappies really bad at leaking breastfed-poo, had a leakage at least once a day. They're fine now for holidays (use cloth normally) as DS is weaning.

Lotster · 15/10/2008 20:48

Thanks for the Halos and Horns tip, off to google them now!

ooh this is interesting. I bought some of their nappy bags yesterday and DH, who is in the packaging industry says that he's pretty sure the base material for the bags comes from GM sources. I didn't think that was a very natural approach either.

I have been using Beaming Baby organics. You can order directly from their website. All ingredients certified organic and natural in recycled bottles with a percentage of sales going towards organic causes. Their wipes are really rather good and the only wipes that don;t irritate my DDs eczema.

MrsJamin · 15/10/2008 21:50

Lotster you can get halos and horns in tescos.

Lotster · 16/10/2008 10:41

Thanks girls, will definately give both a try.

Will probably try Nature Babycare again sometime once they've changed the ingredients, it does have a comforting smell to it.

I am such a product junkie anyway!
