2 yo vomiting - when do you start to panic?

panic may not be the right word but the poor mite has been sick since 4pm today. she cant even keep water down. she didnt want any food of any kind (which is very unusual for her) and just kept asking for water, which I gave her but was back up again about 10 minutes after.

she's asleep in bed now - i've never had a sick child before (apart from baby sick) and really dont know what to do if she is like this in the morning when she wakes up. Hopefully she will sleep through the night but at what point do you take a child to the doctor's?

Sorry to sound so useless but I just dont know how to handle this and to see her so poorly is really upsetting.

sorry, its horrible isnt it

did she still have wet nappies today and were they are normal colour? does she have the runs as well? does she have a high temperature? when she was awake, how did she behave? I mean, was she sleeping or lying on her bed all day, or playing with toys a little etc

Poor you, this is so hard for a parent to deal with! I'm not a doctor, but can tell you a bit about when my DD2 had Rota Virus. Nasty nasty virus. She vomited everything for 3 days, and then had diarrhoea for 4 more days with some more vomiting. We had several pediatrician visits (not in UK), and basically they will not treat a 2yo at all other than with IV fluids if they are dehydrated. So no need to go to the dr for at least another day. Do try to get fluids into her, even just a teaspoon full at a time, possibly with electrolytes if she will have it.

Mine only wanted water, and every time they tested her she was not dehydrated and therefore did not need to be hospitalised. So keep her hydrated with SMALL SIPS all the time, lots of love, and she should be ok. You can check inside eyelids for dehydration, or the skin on back of her hand (skin should return to normal after being pinched up, if it stays up she is dehydrated).

Good luck!!!

It is horrible and scary when you've never been through this before. Don't panic, and don't worry. It is more than likely just a 24 hour sick bug thingy. She may well not be able to keep anything down throughout the night. If she is just bringing water straight back up again, try and break the cycle by not giving her anything for an hour or so - very hard to do if she is asking for water, I know - and then just offer her a little sip every 15 minutes or so. That sometimes helps the stomach settle a bit, and she may be able to keep some fluid down after that. Don't worry about food, and don't worry about her dehydrating at this stage. She should be okay for 24 hours or so. Pinch the skin on her hand, if it springs back she isn't dehydrated. It will probably settle within 24 hours, may be followed by diarrheoa (sp!! ) and then she may be very tired and sleepy for a day or so afterwards. You get used to it, I've just nursed my 3 ( 7, 5 and 2 ) through it, one after the other, and I am absolutely knackered!

she was perfectly fine all day until she first got sick at 4.

she hasnt had a dirty or very wet nappies this afternoon. i think she may have a high temperature, she felt quite cool when she was first sick but as time went on she got quite hot and flushed.

she just wanted to be sat on my lap with a cuddly toy and fell asleep like this - she's now in her cot sleeping soundly.

thanks for all the great advice, you know how it is when you look things up on the internet and you self-diagnose, you think the worst.

hello, see how she is in her self in the morning, my dd had gasterenteritis and I have never seen a child look so ill! She didn't eat properly for about 2 weeks but could keep enough water down to stop her being addmitted. I would just keep offering water, don't worry about food for now, keep off anything dairy. Take her to the gp if she continues not to be able to keep water down as young children can dehydrate really quickly, dry lips, toungue and nappies are a warning sign. Hope she feels better soon XxX

KristinaM · 02/10/2008 19:56

if shes only been sick for a few hours then its too sooon to worry about her getting dehydrated. just keep an eye on her temperature.

its normal for her just to sit on your lap if she's feeling poorly, but if she is very lethargic you should check with your dr. just to reassure you

agree with everyone else about small sips of water. if you are bf she can have breast milk whenever you can get it in her. the advice about clear fluids doesn't apply to bm

girliefriend · 02/10/2008 20:14

agree with the above!

KristinaM · 02/10/2008 21:49

how is she now?

joorla · 07/10/2008 15:53

hey sorry i didnt post any earlier.

my dd was fine when she woke up on friday morning, thank goodness. i woke up with it about 3am on saturday morning and spent 3 days in bed though - great how little ones get over these things so quickly and it really takes if out of us isnt it.
