What are the best foods to offer DS when he has diarrhoea?

DS has just turned one and has got diarrhoea for the first time I'm not sure whether just to offer him the food that he's be eating anyway, or if it's better to offer him things that will bung him up a bit - like porridge. Any advice?

Also, I've been offering him lots of water and he's still getting breastfeeds morning and night, but should I try to give him any rehydration drinks?

TIA

Lucky him to have avoided it for the previous year!
When my dd had it at a similar age I was told to give her white bread and stop the ready brek and weetabix at breakfast and offer rice krispies instead (she refused so I ended up giving her baby rice again for about a week).
I would keep up the water but wouldn't go for rehydration drinks personally.
It stayed with dd for a long time (about 2 months) which the hv said was very common in toddlers. She then got 5 teeth all at once which I think may have been the cause.
Hope he feels better soon!

The "BRAT" diet is often recommended: Bananas, Rice (plain), Apple sauce, white Toast (with very little butter if any). Hope your DS is feeling better soon.

Yes, anything plain. The BRAT stuff is just what I'd be able to face if I felt poorly.

Mine coped with small bowl porridge, toast and water. Bananas always great for energy boost!

Just stick with bfing and perhaps some extra cooled boiled water. Hope he's on the mend.

Thanks for the quick responses! I'll try the BRAT diet - so apple and porridge for dinner tonight then

One last question, how long should I carry on with the plain food once I think he's over the diarrhoea?

Thanks again

No dairy for upset stomachs ever. So leave off the porridge unless youre making it with water.

I always give stuff like dry toast, dry biscuits and plenty of water

Ah thanks mosschops I hadn't realised that about dairy - toast tonight then - he'll not be impressed!

Eggs bind you up nicely {grin] too many of them and he will not go for a week.
