Am in need of advise, dd who is 4.5 has had explosive diarreah for nearly 3 weeks, 6 or 7 times a day, been to GP who said it will run its course and cannot give her anything as she is too young he advised fiber but not too much, how much is too much? she hasn't had any dairy for over a week and no fruit juice or squash. Any ideas????thanks

When did you last see the Dr? If she is losing weight through it, I think I would personally go back again. 3 weeks is a very long time.

I don't know but would fibre not make things worse? If my ds eats too much bran flakes he has the runs

What! Fibre for diarrhea - that's a stupid idea. You need stewed apples. They bulk up the poo and contain pectin which helps settle the bowels. After three weeks though I'd ask him to take a sample for analysis - your child could have something which isn't going to just go away (parasites for example).

Eating fibre will also leach any iron in food she is keeping in out pronto! Things like porridge together with stewed apples are most likely to stay in and help things. But if it's a serious infection then drugs will be required! Be on the lookout for signs of dehydration too.

Poor you and poor your DD

thanks everyone, only saw doc two days ago and took a sample to be looked at should get the results tomorrow, but he seemed unconcerned and said it was just a bug, will be going to another doc if she doesn't improve in the next couple of days, off to make stewed apples and porridge for tea! thanks all

Rosie - it could be just a bug but some bugs are more serious than others. Hope things get better!

hope it is just a bug, she is well in herself eating and drinking and getting very bored with not being at school, sorry didn't make myself very clear to begin with have been to the docs acouple of times, first when it started and again two days ago but just feel like am being fobbed off as neurotic mom!!!!

Sounds like you have been fobbed off TBH

Push for more help if you don't get a definitive diagnosis - it's not reasonable to expect a small child to be ill for nearly a month without an end in sight!
