How do i give 10mo medicine 4 times a day?

She has been prescribed an antibiotic which is in liquid form. I've got to give her 2.5ml 4 times a day for a week. Sounds simple but it really isn't!

It says to do it on an empty stomach or 1 hour before food. It tastes really bad! I have terrible problems trying to get DD to eat as it is, this will make it worse I'm sure. There doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day for her to have an empty stomach an hour before she eats again.

This is her routine, any suggestions as to when I should give it to her and how would be gratefully received...

7.00 milk
8.30 breakfast
10.30 sleep (2 hours)
12.30 lunch
3.00 milk
5.30 dinner
7.00 milk then bed

Does she have a dummy and does the medicine have a fairly thin consistency? If so, Mothercare sell - or used to sell the last time I looked - a medicine dispenser in dummy form. The teat is effectively a hollow chamber with a small hole at the end. You pour the medicine into the chamber, and the baby then ingests the medicine slowly via the hole when sucking on the teat. It might not work if the medicine tastes really horrible, but you never know.

Good luck.

7, 10.30, 3, 7 is the best I can come up with. You have to do the best you can with them, so it won't always be perfect !

I used to squirt it into the side of the throat and follow it up very swiftly with the bottle/a spoonful of something that tastes nice. You could also try a dose before you go to bed with a sip of water afterwards. Sometimes when they are half asleep there is a minimal reaction.

That sounds interesting TheRedQueen as she does have a dummy, at worst it might mean she ends up not wanting the dummy so much, bonus!

Thanks, cmotdibbler, that's the only way I can see of doing it even though not ideal with the milk. Also the milk will take the taste away so she may not protest too much.

Are you using a syringe. If not, the chemist will give you one.

I've got this at the moment with a 4 year old. He was given flucloxacillin which was foul,he is now on fluxopen which is slightly better but the only thing that disguises the taste is very strong vimto and lots of it. Chocolate milkshake occasionally when given with coco pops.

You have my sympathy. On Friday they were threatening to give it in hospital intravenously.

I hope he gets better soon islandofsodor. Its flucloxacillin that DD is taking. Tried syringe this morning and it wasn't entirely successful as she spat it all out again after I shot it in
