What would a Speech Therapist do?

I think its a given now that my ds will have to go to a speech therapist as he is 2.2 and only says daddy (charming) but was wondering what will they actually do?

I talk to him all time, telling him what im doing all the time, we read loads, i ask him things all day, im doing everything i possibly can to help him, but its not making a difference.

What can they achieve where i am obviously failing?

you are not failing! alot of children see the speech therapist thats why she has a job.

My ds had only a few words and also was very hard to understand and still now at 7 has a strange lisp. He started going to the speech therapist at a similar age to your ds. They play puzzles with them, trying to get them to say certain words. She gave us a sheet of exercises and sounds to make to exercise the tongue and mouth. he's still very young, so don't worry, he will get there, my ds stopped seeing her just before school at aged 4.
