It just gave DS shocking cramps, no pooing, just cramps (imagine a 2 year old doubled over in pain, hanging onto your leg and crying). Movicol was far, far kinder. And worked.

I was prescribed this when my dd was 6 months and then a midwife told me it has such a lot of sugar in it. I took it as an adult - its foul. Have you tried prunes, apricots etc? and tons of water...I'm sure you have. Also warm water with a bit of squeezed lemon first thing in the morning.
I also have a friend with a 3 year old who witholds his poo - a control thing that they grow out of...distressing though for you and ds

DS has, for the last 3 weeks ish, been having 2 x 5ml doses of lactulose per day.

He is 3. Not potty trained, partly because when I was about to, he started having what looked like leakage as opposed to "proper" bowel movements.

I was initially dubious, but actually the lactulose seems to have worked pretty well. He has a terrible diet, so have been working at getting more fibre into him. But gone are the days of him straining and straining and being completely hung up about having a poo.

His poo is more moist (god, never thought I'd be so interested in poo) but perhaps a little too much so, and am now thinking about slightly reducing the dose for a while.

I have also heard really good things about movicol.

My dd is 2.4 and has suffered for a while from hard poo. Diet didn't help so the doctor put her on lactulose. It was awful. It didn't help the probblem at all and gave her terrible stomach cramps. We changed to Movicol and it is much better. She is taking a sachet every second day and finding it much easier to go.

We used it with both ds's. It worked and no side effects.

Make sure he drinks plenty as it works by drawing fluid into the bowel. Hope it works
