DD(8) been complaining since Saturday Evening of painful cheeks, we been out on a nature walk and picnic Saturday afternoon and thought she'd caught sunburn.
Yesterday morning she woke up complaining of a sore throat, cheeks were still red and a little puffy, so thought it could possibly be Tonsilitus so said I'd call Doc's first thing and get her in.

Took Ds(4) to school this morning, he's just started full time, and then DD to docs for her appointment.Have to sit in waiting room for 20 mins, cos as usual Docs running late, finally get called in, he takes one look at her and says MUMPS!!

Got all Mumps advice, and ask what to do about Ds , as he's had no MMR and at school.Doc says just to keep an eye for symptoms developing over next couple of weeks, and if they do appear to bring him in.

Get home ring school to let them know about Dd and get their advice about Ds- their's total opposite to Doc's -I had to go straight back and pick him up, and he's to be kept off till we're pretty sure there's no mumps.

So...I have 1 poorly Dd with pillow and blanket wrapped up on the sofa, feeling really grotty and wanting peace and quiet.

And 1 Ds feeling totally well, playing with his toys rather loudly up the diining table, and wanting to do 'exciting' things.

Day 1 of Mumps isolation ........only another 9 (at the least) to go

how come he hasn't had his MMR yet? or was that your choice?

your poor dd - hope she feels better soon - and hope your ds doesn't get it, it is worse for boys as it can cause impotence.

my thoughts are with you and hope you find something "exciting" to do.

Buda · 29/09/2008 13:05

I don't think it causes impotence Red! It can cause sterility I think!

How come your DS hasn't had MMR? Has your DD? Did you not realise that they may get these illnesses if you didn't vaccinate?

RedOnHerHead · 29/09/2008 13:06

oops - thats what i meant -

My family have a history of bad reactions to the MMR, so as a matter of choice I had decided that any children I had were not going to have it.

Ds had bad reactions to all baby jab's he had (hib etc), he was hospitilized twice as a baby after his jabs.

Dd had 1 lot of the MMR, by accident as the doctors didn't tell me what it was- it was written in her records that I didn't want her to have it, but they gave her it anyway.

And Yes I am fully aware that that by not vaccinating them they are possibly going to get these illnesses, but, I cannot be the only one not having my children vaccinated as my Dd must have caught it from somewhere!

She's feeling abit grotty, yes, but no worse than she would if she had flu, throat infection etc....I'm keeping them in so they cannot infect any other children (now I know that she has it anyway).

lol Red!

Fair enough moonmother. I am a bit sensitive about this as my mother contracted rubella when pg with my sister. The baby only lived for 10 hours after birth.

I respect your choice but suspect my Mum would feel that she didn't have a choice. It is such a difficult area.

moonmother · 29/09/2008 13:45

Yes I agree Buda, I understand how people have no choice when affected like that, also children with special needs, immune problems.

It just scares me silly, that my Ds could have a serious reaction, like he did to his baby jabs, the reactions have left him with a weak chest.

My Db had a extremely bad reaction to the MMR, he was one of the first batch of children to have it, he was in hospital for 3 weeks, as an 18mth old, I remember going to visit him and it terrfied me, that memory and my Ds reactions to the jabs he has had, is why I made the choice I have.

I wish the powers that be would let people have the single jabs. That would help.
