HELP: Loosing a battle with armour plated nits/lice - need more ideas

Wills · 28/09/2008 17:52

I'm a completely neurotic when nits hit town. Normally I go out and get the strongest formula in town and treat all heads in the house, clean all the bedding, boil all hairbrushes and hair paraphanalia. My eldest (8years) is Aspergic like (under dx at the moment) and goes bananas when using the formula or the nit comb. Being neurotic this doesn't stop me - nevertheless every week since the middle of August now I've found the nits again. We must have tried every formula in the country and gone through more bottles of hair conditioner than you would believe! I've also tried the new "wonder comb" that costs the earth. SHE STILL HAS NITS!!!! What the hell can I do.

I spritz DS with water and tea-tree oil every morning before school. He has a head of hair like a hay rick and touch wood, he's remained nit free.

I'm paranoid now. School have sent home a 'check your child' letter and....arrrrgggghhh

Wills · 28/09/2008 18:41

OK, so not every day, just every other! we'll get going Thanks

I've heard hedrin is good, but on a boy you could use olive oil to the same effect. Smother his hair in it, let him sleep in it and then wash a few times to get rid of the oil, do this every 4 days.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/09/2008 18:44

I sympathise, I hate the feckers and posted a spectacular freak out thread on here when we first got them.

Podrick · 28/09/2008 18:47

Dump the chemicals
Comb with condtioner every 4th day for 4 sessions - all of you who have nits must do this on the same day.

Each time the lice you catch will be smaller - and if not then you have a NEW INFESTATION from outside of your family - and you need to start again and do 3 more sessions.

Washing your bedding is unecessary.

Blandmum · 28/09/2008 18:56

Forget the chemicals, they are becoming ever more resistant.

Get a good nit comb

Get lots of cheap conditioner

Every 2-3 days wet the hair a slather on lots of conditioner.

Plonk them down in front of their favorite dvd with a sweetie bribe. Put the hair in sections and do this every 2-3 days. Within 2 weeks you should be clear unless the kids get re-infesterd

It must be hard with your dc having asd symptomes, can you keep their hair as short as possob;e, or does he/she freik out at the hair dressers? if so can you keep their hair tied back as much as possible?

Don't worry about bedding, they only leave the head for another head unless they are dying

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 28/09/2008 18:58

Agree with DWP, the oil will do it. It works much better than conditioner.

jicky · 28/09/2008 18:59

I have an electric nit comb which is good - you get a satisfying noise when it kills a nit as well! I pull out all eggs with finger nails and comb twice a day for 2 weeks if I haven't caught them on the first day.

lindseyfox · 28/09/2008 20:39

HEDRIN

a small bottle will do the head twice

it has no pesticides, it smothers the lice so they explode (basic terms!!)

need to still do it 7 days later as nothing will kill eggs or prevent them hatching.

put on dry hair leave for an hr to dry then put child to bed and then wash off in morning.

has no nasty smell as no chemicals, can be used on children with asthma and excema.

As an adult I have used it and have really sensitive skin and asthma and found it really effective and no ill side effects.

can be got on prescription for children for free.

you wont find it on shelve in shops its kept behing the counter as its a pharmacy product but it can be brought from behind counter.

garden · 28/09/2008 21:22

hello, try the nitty gritty comb and loads of conditioner- its £10 but gets eggs out as well- good luck and they will go!

lingle · 29/09/2008 10:23

ooh lindseyfox - nice tip about Hedrin on prescription!

SixSpotBurnet · 29/09/2008 10:28

I use the [http://www.chc.org/products_kit.cfm Bugbuster] combs with the tea tree combing lotion that you can get from Holland & Barrett and the like.

The Bugbuster kit includes a leaflet that tells you when to comb ie how many days' gap to leave between combings.

SixSpotBurnet · 29/09/2008 10:28

www.chc.org/products_kit.cfm oops

cupsoftea · 29/09/2008 10:32

agree with the conditioner & comb - I did this every day for weeks to get rid of nits. Did this whilst they were in the bath - difficult & I was so annoyed to hear at school that some parents were leaving their kids with nits until the hols!!! This was because there was no point as they'd get them again!!!

Also washed all bedding, towels, clothes on 60 - also wiped down the car seats. Had to put their unwashable at 60 soft toys away for two weeks.

lindseyfox · 29/09/2008 19:39

its ok in my line of work recommending daily only thing other than conditon and comb that we are allowed to recommend.

its made by thorton and ross sure if you emailed them via website they would send you some information and maybe some freebie pens etc.

Wills · 30/09/2008 11:56
