Unidentified rash requires identification....any rash detectives out there?

DTD1 - 7yo
Rash on face. no colour what so ever (well normal skin colour IYSWIM).
Just a pimply sanpapery rash. It is a similar texture to when DD3 had Scarlet fever except it is not red and it is restricted to her face.

It is mostly down the sides of her nose and on her cheeks but also spreads to some extent to forehead and chin.

She says it is a little itchy (for which I will give piriton if it bothers her).

She also has a mild fever - but that could be the cold which is doing the rounds in this house.

Any ideas?

I am watching this with interest OhWellNeverMind as it sounds very similar to one which just appeared on my dd's face. (she is 12)

I think it was a reaction to a new soap as it was nowhere else . We put some Simple Cream on it and it has gone now. No fever though.

I hope someone is able to help you or best if you see your GP tomorrow.

OhWellNeverMind · 28/09/2008 21:01

TY for replying Otter.

We have not put anything new on her face....well we used a new shampoo yesterday but I think we would have known by the screaming if we had coated her face in it.

I have never seen anything like it...other than DDs scarlet fever - where the rash had exactly this texture. 90% sure it is not SF though cos that appears in the hot pockets of the body and tends to specifically exclude the face.

DP is currently insisting she will go to school tomorrow "because if it was anything important it would be on her trunk" . I would be happy for her to go to school if I knew what it was and if it was iot infectious (obvioously).

SF is also bright red (charactersitically described as "sunburn rash") which this is not.

My son's eczema flare- ups used to start like that - small pimples, rough and itchy. He normally reacted to things like scented bubble bath (Matey was the worst). Since then I have always used Oilatum Emollient in the bath and the flare-ups don't occur any more. For his hair I use something by "Halos n Horns" - Zingy Orange body wash. This is hypoallergenic and Dermapedic. It's brilliant and smells lovely - I bought it in Superdrug. A tube lasts for ages as you only need a small amount to wash the hair.

Does she usually have sensitive skin? Could be an allergy.
Most importantly have you done the glass test on it?
My ds2 had a rash on his arms and legs a few weeks ago then a few days later he started throwing up and it spread to his face, failed the glass test so I rushed him to hospital. It wasn't meningitus thank god but a virus called HSP.
He's come back from his Nan's this weekend with a similar rash on his arms and legs which I'm thinking is caused by ex mil using her bubble bath and shampoo on him .
I would say if in doubt keep her off school and take her to the doctors.

OhWellNeverMind · 28/09/2008 21:15

No she doesn't have sensitive skin, and has never suffered eczma.

There is nothing to do the glass test on. It has no colour - just texture.

Slapped cheek?
Your dh is right - when ds was in hospital they said that unless a rash is on the torso its not usually anything serious.

OhWellNeverMind · 28/09/2008 21:26

not red. I thought slapped cheek was bright red?

Honestly there is no hint of colour. You can't see from over a metre. Get close though and it stands out a mile.

She is pretty itchy now - despite piriton (although it was 4m out of date )

Well I'm stumped with that one (not that I'm an expert or anything).
You could try calamine lotion if its itchy.
(I found some when ds had his rash and the use by date was Aug 06!!!)

cktwo · 28/09/2008 21:42

It sounds like the kind of rash i get on my face when I've put something on it I'm allergic to. Oil of Ulay used to bring out this rash when I was a kid (I put on my mum's, thought I was grown up!) and sometimes I get it now if I use something new. I does clear up in a few days but is itchy and can sting if moisturiser is applied.

Washersaurus · 28/09/2008 21:48

It sounds like an eczema rash - DS1 still gets it on his arms and back if we don't moisturise him enough with the Unguentum cream.

OhWellNeverMind · 28/09/2008 21:50

hmm....the best from googling is allergy.

I just don't know what would have caused it though

OP posts:
ginnny · 30/09/2008 11:49

Did you ever find out what it was?

OhWellNeverMind · 30/09/2008 17:01

no.

Took the decision that is is likey to be allergy or something. It did look better yesterday morning - although it had flared at little by yesterday evening. It has done the same again today - although it is better than it was Sunday.

If it hasn't gone by Thurs/Fri I will make a GP appointment.
