Teething - first premolar

DS was grouchy on Friday (although fine at nursery) and I noticed that night that he was getting his first premolar. We had a bad night on Friday night and he was grouchy (tho distractable) during the day yesterday. Last night he tried to feed all night but kept coming off and crying.

Suppose what I'm asking is does this seem normal, and how long is it likely to last? Just a bit worried that everything I'm putting down to 'teething' is actually caused by something else which i've missed.

How old is he? TBH sounds exactly like DS (18 months) who is getting all his molars at the moment, every time a "spike" of one is cutting through the gum he wants to nurse all night, but fidgets and pulls off all the time. Very annoying but it passes and then we get a good week or so before it starts again.

DS is 4 down, 8 to go with the molars!!

yes, he's 17mo!
how long does each one last?
i thought they only got 8 in total?! If there are more, don't tell me!

I could be wrong, let's see .... there are 20 teeth in total, four incisors top and bottom (DS has all those, and one molar in each corner IYSWIM), so that's eight teeth, so 12 molars in total, 3 on each side top and bottom.

Sorry, it's 12. I think the very back 4 come a little bit later, my nephew has 16 teeth but doesn't have the very back ones and he hasn't had any teething for about 6 months.

Each molar has taken DS about a fortnight, on and off - but he did get two at the same time which was a mercy.

I think those very back ones don't come until they're about six. We've also had a veritable fistful coming through all at once - premolars and incisors. The first one was worst and he seems a bit more resigned with the others. I'm not sure whether they've all come through or not - it's very difficult to see and he bites me if I put my fingers in his mouth!

There are actually only 8 deciduous molars.

2 each side, top & bottom [8]

2 incisors, each side, top & bottom [8]

1 canine, each side, top & bottom [4]

Here is a good diagram which explains what each tooth is

This eruption chart tells you when they are due to erupt

Molars can be more painful when they erupt, as the cusps are blunt & therefore do not cut through the gum as easily.

OK, so DS has his 4 incisors top and bottom, has front molar top and bottom each side, but doesn't have the canines - there's a gap between the incisors and the molars on each side. So if the back molars don't come yet, we're nearly there! Yay!!!!

DS was on boob all night last night, I managed to sleep through most of it but woke up with almighty backache. You have my sympathies.
