Food poisoning - how quickly does it set in?

DS has just been v sick, is a bit feverish and shivery, which is how I always get when I've eaten something dodgy. So is it likely to have been his lunch today or would it have been his tea last night?

I would have thought if it has been his tea last night it would have shown up sooner.
Did anyone eat the same as Dsfor lunch and how are they ?

No: his dad took him to a cafe for lunch and he had a fryup (they do this most weekends) - his dad orders the full English and dad eats the bacon and the toast and DS has the sausage, eggs and beans. DS did have some sausage rolls for tea last night that had been in the freezer for A While but I would have thought that if it had been those it would have shown up sooner (ISTR it's about 8 hours between eating whatever and getting sick).

Oh, BTW, before the MN Food Police descend, DS does get plenty of fruit and veg normally .

anythign between 6 and 72 hours, depending on the causative agent

I have had rotovirus (we think) food poisoning from something I ate on a Sunday that didn't kick in until the Tuesday evening. And I know that is when it was caused because there were at least 3 other cases I knew about.

DH has had fp that took about 36 hours to kick in.

Some bacteria are quicker than others; sometimes it depends on the food - i.e. had the bacteria already produced toxins in the food that was eaten, in which case the reaction will be much quicker.

Oh hell, poor little sod, maybe it was the sausage rolls. I will see how he does tonight and tomorrow...

I'm sure you know to keep an eye on his fluid levels - is it just vomiting and shiveriness, nothing the other end?

solidgoldbrass · 28/09/2008 00:57

Nothing other end yet: he has had some water and gone back to sleep.

It can take up to 3 days for FP to kick in... usually though vomiting takes less time (other end takes longer).
It could be something else ..like an airbourne virus etc ...so don't beat yourself up about 'dodgy sausage rolls'...
Just keep an eye on him and keep him hydrated...good luck and hopefully no more cleaning up yuky bedding...
