Hello this is to ask if anyone knows what to expect at an eye test for my ds who is 2.5. For ages he appears to hold books very very close, only repond in a busy room if you direct his attention by speaking. It has been a real worry for us so to rule out poor eyesight (he may be ignoring us and be very particular re reading etc) a test has been arranged at a special childrens health centre - no appoinment has come through yet thanks

Assuming the test is the same as it is here. They send you through a picture card with about 20 pictures and ask you to teach your DS to name each picture in turn.

At the test they use flashcards that match the pictures you've been working with and expect your child to name them. They also use lights to check how well your ds can follow a moving object. They may do other 'games' to test certain aspects of her sight.

We didn't get sent cards through beforehand, but at the test they held up cards with regular things like Cars, duck, apple, etc for the child to name. Also moved objects around in front of him, presumably to watch if his eyes followed the objects.

At ours they gave DS1 a card with pictures on it and once in the room they put on glasses with one eye blacked out and help up a card with the pictures on and pointed to different ones and asked DS1 to point to the corresponding picture on his card.
And the light thing.
very brief
then a sticker.

We had to get ds's eyes tested last week as a result of him blinking lots. I was really nervous about taking him as he is not good in new situations and clams up and won't speak. He refused to put him head in the machine that takes a picture of the back of your eye (don't blame him really cause it did look quite scary), but the actual eye test was really good. The optician took her time to speak to ds about herself and what she was going to do. She asked that I did the test first to show him that there was nothing to worry about. She held up picture cards and asked me to cover one of his eyes at a time while he said what the pictures were, these pictures got smaller and smaller. She then got her torch thingy out to look at his eye balls in detail. He did not like this but I found that saying to him 'oh, ds, keep watching the light, somethings going to happen to it in a minute, see if you can see what happens' This seemed to keep his atention on the light. Turned out he has perfect vision for a 3 yr old. He was rewarded with a sticker and seetie. tbh i was really nervous about it because I didn't know how they would do it, but i'll now be taking him back ever year to get him used to it and to make sure his eyes are always healthy.

oooppppsss sorry for the long reply!!!
