My DS, 3 yrs old had his addenoids & tonsils out yesterday, he is is so much pain but will not swallow any of the meds, paracetamol, ibuprofen & codiene they have given me. We have tried pinning him down and he gets so distressed his nose starts bleeding...it's heartbreaking, when he came around they gave him a suppository painkiller. Does anyone know if I used the syringe this way for meds if they would go in his bloodstream? am trying to get through to the hospital.

Mummyplonk: does your ds have a fever?

I have looked after lots of children after they have had their tonsils and adenoids removed, all of them bar one was up and about after a few hours and eating. I would contact the ward if he is in alot of pain, especially if he has a fever aswell.

Mummyplonk, glad you got the suppositories. Top trick for supps is that they are shaped like a bullet, but stay in better if you put them in back to front. So, blunt end first.

It was only raised a bit to 37.5 earlier and back down to 36.4 before bedtime so have been keeping a close eye on it. He has had a fair amount of fluids today so that's good but no food. He is dealing with it better now and just wimpering when he swallows rather than the scared screaming & crying we had this morning but will def take your advice if still no food & pain tommorrow will contact the ward.

To reassure you mummyplonk, research shows that post-operative fever in the first 24 hours is quite common after this sort of op, and not usually linked to infection.

He needs to eat, the food takes away all the bacteria and debris from the wound site and helps to prevent infection. 37.5 is slightly high. It's possible that an infection is beginning to set in if he has a low grade fever and is in alot of pain. Dose him up with ibuprofen if you can, they do need to have a look though. If it is an infection and has set in this quickly after surgery then I would give them a call sooner rather than later.

I hope he feels better soon. I had my tonsils taken out 5 years ago and had a really bad infection after. It was horrid.

avenanap · 25/09/2008 21:54

Oh, thanks for that lou I didn't know that.

I'd still call them tomorrow if he's in pain. He still needs to eat to clean the site.

How is he today mummyplonk?

mummyplonk · 26/09/2008 11:47

Hi, he woke approx every two hours in the night, was sick at 3am (just water really) then slept til 5.30am, gave him another supp, and bribed him with his favourite tv programme and he ate a small amount of toast and a finger of kitkat , at least it was something.

In the last few hours he has perked up so much, he is now having a fruit puree & some ham as I type. Think he was def discharged too early, 3yrs old is too young for day surgery for an op of that nature, but thanks all for helping me through 24hrs of hell. x

Glad to hear he's feeling better and sorry if I didn't sound sympathetic...i was meaning that imo he shouldn't have been home either.
