Catheters

My DD is having an operation in three weeks time and will be in hospital the first few days then will come home with a catheter. I'm really nervous about this but the surgeon said it isn't going to be as bad as I think and is a very minor issue in the whole thing. Anyway I am worried and can't even think what they look like, where they are attached etc! Well I know where but can someone just help me a bit with what to expect please? I take it DD will need to wear nighties rather than pjs or is it easy enough to put clothes over them? Will she wear a nappy over it for when she does a poo or would that be risky in terms of infection(she's having an operation on her bladder tubes etc)

Thanks for the replies, Cheesesarnie what a good plan about teddy/dolly, she does have a teddy that weras a nappy atm so can use him maybe.

uptomyeyes sorry to hear you are having all this worry too, I hope all goes well. Lol at not the most elegant time, sounds like the hook thing makes sense though to stop you pulling on it. Bit concerned that DD will do that herself.

Really feeling anxious about the whole thing but feel better about the catheter bit I think. After all, hopefully when we are home with that then the hardest bit will be over (the actual op and first bit of recovery).

Update, things have changed a bit. The first surgeon wants to do the op in two stages so will do a fairly minor one on the date planned then later (not sure when , next year I think) do the more serious invasive stuff. So as far as I know, the recovery time is much shorter for the initial bit and I THINK she may not need a cathter although she may do I'm not sure. Feeling fairly devastated at this turn of events tbh but trying to see it positively, ie no major operation just yet. Still very upset at two ops, two anaesthetics etc but there it is. Thanks so much for your help anyway. She may well need a cathter this time and will definately nedd one at the next op so you've all been really helpfl and reassuring. Good to hear stories of others going through similar(not good for them obviously but ykwim)

DD has got an ear infection so I haven't had much sleep and its been a bit of a bad day generally so am hoping I feel a bit better tomorrow. Also need a new car and got DD's birthday and party sunday so lots of distractions at least.

Uptomyeyes not sure if you will be back online yet but how did it go for your DS? Well I hope.

Oh that must be a shock for you but keep telling yourself it's all in your DD's best interests. Hope you both enjoy the party. Take care.
