Mouth ulcers in toddlers?

My Dd 20mos has had a high temperature on and off for two days and nights, brought down with Nurofen, she also has swollen glands. She wont eat much at all and this morning after I'd bfed her and she went to sleep, I managed to get a little look in her mouth. She seems to have what looks like mouth ulcers - 4 or 5 that I can see. I'm taking her to the doctors this afternoon, but I wondered if anyone had had experience of their toddlers having these? what could have caused it etc?
She is obviously in so much pain and is literally drooling everywhere. She's also teething.

Oooh! your poor lo.
I've seen about 5 in my Dd's mouth, but she's not being very co operative!

I'm happy to bfeed her as she wants atm, so she should get enough fluids I think.

Off to bed now, I didn't get a great deal of sleep last night!

did your GP know you are still bf?

I know that it doesn't mean you have to stop - but just a couple of things to be aware of.

Coldsore virus (I hate calling it herpes in this context) is extremely contagious. This means that she will may well infect your breasts. I don't envisage that there will be any problems with this per se, but it could mean that she may effectively re-infect herself. If you do notice any small blisters on your breast I would probably treat them with Acyclovir (the stuff you buy for proper coldsores) to try and limit their spread. It may help prevent re-infection. DD3 ended up infecting her thumb in a very similar way through thumb sucking and we got acyclovir (standard zovirax, nothing special) as recommended by GP on it straight away. we managed to prevent re-infection. With viral infections though they must start treatment within the first 6-12hrs of infection. If it was me I would buy teh Acycolvir now so you have it if you need it so that you can treat straight away if you need to.

Oh and it appears that just talking baout coldsores has triggered one for me

Wow! thanks RI. It did have me wondering about the breast thing actually. I wondered what I could do to stop it and assumed normal washing wouldn't help. I don't think I mentioned it to him actually .
I think I'll give the HV a call now...

i am, however extraoplating from DD3s infected thumb.

HV seemed to think that if I don't have broken skin around the nipples, that I should be ok...they were(well one)sore last week, so I hope there's no problem for me as well...

Dd has had a rash on her arms, hands, legs, feet and bottom for two, nearly three days. No more temp though and she's been eating again. The mouth ulcers seem to have abated, so that is great news.
I've been looking at some online info and I have a strong suspicion that she has HFM, not coldsores which will of course be good news all round.

And so to bed...
