Roll up and diagnose Flamechick for me - am concerned and baffled!

Yesterday morning she came in to me with bright red cheeks. Said she felt hot, so I took her top off and she had red tops of arms and a red "bib". Looked patchy blotchy and was boiling like sunburn.

Originally thought slapped cheek, but it spread across her back during the day. Took her to GP, and she said some random allergic reaction, gave phenergan and hydrocortisone cream.

She has woken up this morning and it stretches down her hands, and is starting to creep over her legs (less dense) down to her feet.

I have just given more phenergan so I can see the effect it has (rather than putting her to bed and seeing her once it has worn off). If it is some random allergy to a bite or something she has ingested, how long would it take to go?

Plus... if she is allergic to the new cat, would it have shown up earlier on (we have had the cat about 10 days).

Tis more joined than that - will try and convince her to let me take pics again

I think i would take her back to GP's,if it hasn't got any better since yesterday.

BlueberryBeret · 27/08/2008 10:52

Nah, she won't let me - the best I managed was a very far off zoomed in shot of her cheek. Hopefully the doctor will call soon.

She is very whingey and easily moved to tears today, but then she has had sedative so is probably tired!!!

Ok, he says lack of temp or any new symptoms except more rash, he thinks still an allergy of some sort.

Leave her til Friday, if there is no change (better or worse) by then, then to bring her back in. Still not a clue what she is allergic to, although it seems that my sister is allergic to some cats without the eyes/nose reaction, she just goes red where she has had contact. I don't know if the cat slept in her bed whilst we were away, so will change the bedding tonight.

Poor thing looks badly sunburnt and is soooooooooo whingy because she is bored and irritable.

but NHS direct website says scarletina can be completely lacking in symptoms except for the rash, but is still contagious. It might also make someone with a compromised immune system very ill.

what is it with doctors? would it kill him to do a throat swab to rule it out?

EustaciaVye · 27/08/2008 13:23

If you are still concerned about her later then wait until 6.10pm and call the OOh doctor. They may see her.

BlueberryBeret · 27/08/2008 15:38

Reading more about scarlet fever - the face is flushed cheeks with pale mouth, which is exactly what she has! Out of hours is sounding appealing.

A random allergic reaction that isn't easing at all with antihistamine vs scarlet fever which is a complication after chicken pox....

Oh poor little chick

Was last night any good by the way? Not asking for details just a general yeah or nay.

LackaDAISYcal · 27/08/2008 18:15

flame, hope you get to see someone this evening and that flamechick is feeling a bit better soon.

chocolatecakeforbreakfast · 27/08/2008 18:27

Sounds like slap cheek which my dc's had a few months ago, think it is the same sort of virus as chicken pox. Had never heard of it until i took ds into the chemist but it is exactly as it sounds - huge bright red cheeks that look like they've been slapped. Gradually spread across chest and arms and legs. The rash stayed for about a week but gradually go paler and paler, although quite strangely stayed on elbows, palms of hands and bottoms of feet for quite a while. They weren't ill with it but it is contagious so meant to be kept away from other children etc. Always best to put your mind at rest though with any rash so speaking to docs sounds like the best move. Hope she's ok

chocolatecakeforbreakfast · 27/08/2008 18:29

Sorry...just re-read your op and you said not slap cheek - ignore me totally - note to self 'must read op properly before posting'!!

BlueberryBeret · 27/08/2008 19:24

Last night was amazing StG

Have seen another doctor, who agrees not allergy (hurrah for cat). He says it looks similar to both scarlet fever and slapped cheek. Doesn't know what it is, but due to the appearance it is most likely contagious and we have to stay clear of children, immune suppressed and pregnant women until it has gone.

Yey about the cat. Bummer about isolation.

Glad it went ok, always on tenterhooks when I suggest my mum in case it turns out to be total crap IYKWIM.

BlueberryBeret · 27/08/2008 22:00

she was amazing. Very envious of her skill

Polgara2 · 27/08/2008 22:22

Does look exactly like dd1 when she had slapped cheek if that's any help?

Polgara2 · 27/08/2008 22:25

On the other hand dd2 also looked very similar when she had what I am convinced was scarlet fever but the emergency doctor wasn't sure about. Which miraculously improved when he changed his mind and gave her antibiotics 'just in case' . Sorry am not really helping am I?

BlueberryBeret · 27/08/2008 22:38

Tis great when people clarify things like that

If there is no improvement by Friday mum is taking her to her GP and saying she is staying on holiday.

OP posts:
EustaciaVye · 28/08/2008 21:57

How has she been tonight?

BlueberryBeret · 28/08/2008 22:34

It seems to be draining out of her body downwards - she now has a spotty bum, but her bib is more like a low necklace now She's fine in herself, just stir crazy!
