ANYBODY WITH A TODDLER WHO IS IRON DEFICIENT

MY 3 YEAR OLD ds only just been diagnosed, after over a year and a half of me telling my health visitors there is something not right with him! DS is now on iron medication, but his behaviour hasn't improved, i hear that if it is left too long they can be left with permanent behaviour problems! I was so angry when I found that out, I just kept getting fobbed off, and that he was a normal little boy! Anybody else's little one had this and has their behaviour improved?

i've been told dd is iron deficient but not anaemic but i rarely give her the iron supplement tbh as both my mother and i have problems absorbing iron so it's likely she has the same. not willing to make her permanently constipated for no good reason.

if you knew he needed iron why didn't you just get some from the pharmacy? ferrinsol is non prescription.

should have said... she's a nightmare but i'd be slow to blame that on iron deficiancy..... she's just a stubborn kid

Go talk to your GP about it-it seems there are a lot of myths about iron deficiency.

hiya, I didn't go to the pharmacy because Ihad no idea what was wrong with him, as his behaviour is all over the place anyway, we are awaiting to be assessed to see if he is on the autistic spectrum too.

That is how we found out he was iron deficient, as the doc wanted to rule things out from initial blood tests.

you need plenty of meat,(if he takes it) orange juice with the meal to help store the iron and green leafy vegetables. but low iron is pretty common i am sure in 3 year olds

i'd be very wary of blaming too much on the iron deficiency, like slarty said, lots of toddlers are a little anaemic... if he's not anaemic enough for you to have seen the symptoms (and they are fairly obvious if you're looking for something wrong with your child) i'd doubt he's anaemic enough to be causing the behaviour problems.

thanks everyone, that's what i was thinking to be honest. Even as a baby we had problems with him, so I know there is no way he would have been iron deficient then as babies iron stores are full to the brim. Ah, well back to square one again! Hopefully we will get to the bottom of things, will let you know how we get on!
