Child with ongoing stomach pain and diarrhoea after Bali trip

My son has had stomach ache and diarrhoea for nearly 10 days now. He hasn’t managed to start school this term as he’s been too unwell. GP has taken urine sample (fine) blood sugar (fine) and we’re awaiting stool samples.

We went to Bali in the summer holidays and I came back with severe D&V which wiped me out for over a week. For the most part I’ve been ok but my ‘funny tummy’ has come back too. The GP tested my stool too but it’s come back normal.

My son is throughly fed up and of course school are questioning why he’s had 6 days off if the GP can’t find an answer… Any words of wisdom?

My nephew recently spent 2 nights in hospital for something similar. His digestive system was completely wiped after food poisoning.
He met a gastroenterologist who is rebooting him with a special diet and probiotics.

Hi, do you know what probiotics he has been prescribed?, i’m having similar symptoms

Alflorex

Good luck

We had what they thought was Gardia and treated with the meds, (which cured it) unfortunately ours ended being coeliac which they think was triggered by it. Before we go anywhere unusual abroad now we take extra probotics before and after the trip.

Did they test for giardia. It is classic for recurring symptoms

but in general he needs to be seen by an infectious disease specialist who covers tropical medicine. Have a look at this hospital

That was the first thing that came to my mind.

In 1980, I was part of a large group of British students on a one month course in Krasnodar. We were all unwell.

After we got home, we got a letter to say that one of the girls had been tested by the Institute for Tropical Medicine and that we all had giardiasis. Apparently, the chlorine tablets we had taken with us doesn't deal with that particular problem and we'd all gone swimming in the Kuban' river anyway...

I recall that we were told to ask our GP for metronidazole.

It could an H Pilori stomach infection which would be discovered through a blood test. I had what I thought was a stomach bug that wouldn’t go away and stool tests came back clear and my doctor randomly decided to do this one last test. 2 weeks of 3 different antibiotics 4 times a day was brutal but necessary.

Did he get a diagnosis now?
