12 year old chest pain EVERY evening

Anyone have any advice? She’s fine all day but as soon as she gets into bed she complains of chest pain. She can’t pinpoint exactly where it is, but it is somewhere under her heart, in the rib area.
We have tried reflux meds, paracetamol, deep heat, ice pack, hot water bottles, stretching, yoga poses etc!
She ends up crying in pain most nights but I think that may be more from panicking.
It can last from a few minutes to an hour.
Any thoughts? Maybe growing pains?
I’ll get a GP app next week but it’s been happening every night for 2 weeks now.

Costochondritis? DD ended up in A&E for this. (Harmless but painful)

I’d ring 111 for advice. They might get you an earlier appointment at a walk in centre or suggest A and E.

2 weeks is a long time to have this poor girl, I'd be calling 111 as a minimum next time it happens or take her to a&e for tests.

Can you try giving a dose of calpol or neurofen about an hour before bed?

Is it at the same time every evening or is it as she gets into bed (bedtime does of course vary slightly every evening)
GP seems appropriate

Yes, my friends son had this, worrying but harmless but obviously get her checked.

That just masks the pain, it's been 2 weeks and she cries in pain, the GP will (hopefully) just order blood tests, ecg, chest xray so I'd be seeking medical advice sooner.

Gluten sensitivity?

Thawtfulpanda · Yesterday 11:19

My dd has this and it was a food allergy.

hhheeyyyy · Yesterday 13:33

She’s never been sensitive to any foods so don’t think it’s that. It always happens when she lies down for bed which makes me think costochondritis. When it started I thought it was prechordial catch as it only lasted 30 seconds or so. I will get a gp app asap but it’s not always been this bad, to start with it just lasted 30 seconds or so. It’s so strange that she’s fine all day.

She panics when it starts which I think is what makes her cry. She panics that she’ll have the pain forever and it won’t go away and I think her panicking makes it worse. Paracetamol has been helping slightly but it usually goes on its own after a while. I’m going to try ibuprofen tonight instead.

Acid reflux can feel very, very painful (like a heart attack!), so perhaps don't rule it out.

It's unlikely, but myocarditis is another possibility given age - it can be triggered by a virus https://guysandstthomasspecialistcare.co.uk/conditions/myocarditis/

Costochondritis as suggested by others is a sensible suggestion. My dad had it after a chest infection and it gradually got better by itself.

I have complex autoimmune issues and they all started around 12-13, initially with chest pain and fatigue. Initially I would be asking for tests for anaemia, thyroid issues and adrenal insufficiency - with the adrenal insufficiency it’s incredibly rare so the doctor won’t have much knowledge of it (I have Addisons which is a form of adrenal insufficiency and I train medical students about it) but ask for a morning cortisol blood test taken between 8-9am to exclude it, it’s easy to exclude by a result over 300.

Geneticsbunny · Yesterday 19:21

Could it be period related?

TirednessOnToast · Yesterday 21:48

OP, it could be many things but it's definitely worth getting her seen ASAP. My son (then 19) had a 'sore chest'. He needed a week in hospital. Hopefully it's not serious but get her checked out ASAP x

Poor thing, that must be really upsetting for both of you, especially when it's happening every evening. I do think it's sensible that you're planning to see your GP, as chest pain in children can have lots of different causes and it's always worth getting it checked properly. Hopefully it's something straightforward, but in the meantime I'd trust your instincts, and if the pain becomes severe, changes suddenly or she's struggling to breathe, I'd seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting.
