Food allergy reaction in baby after months of exposure

My baby is almost 10 months. I thought we were out of the woods on the allergen front but yesterday we had a scary experience which I believe was an allergic reaction.

She ate pancakes made from egg, wheatabix, banana and peanut butter but when I was cleaning her up I noticed a spreading red hive like rash all round her chin, top of chest, back of neck, up behind her ears and even a bit on one foot(!?). She then vomited about 10 minutes after that.

These are all ingredients she must have had 20+ times before, and even an exact recipe she has had 4 times before without issue so at first I didn’t even realise an allergic reaction was a possibility.

The rash faded really quickly so even though I took her to A&E it was gone by the time they looked at her. The doctor who saw her said they didn’t think it was an allergic reaction but just a ‘coincidence’ and they gave no advice as to what to do next other than to just try small amounts of the ingredients again to see what happens.

The more I research this the more it seems extremely likely this was an allergic reaction and we need to be prepared before we start trying egg and peanut again.

Im so sad and stressed as I didn’t realise an allergic reaction after months of exposure was even a possibility.

has anyone experienced this?

we have a GP appointment in a week about this but they’re not usually very knowledgeable about anything baby related tbh..

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

This happened to my DS. He had eaten homous many many times and then one day his lips started swelling up. He developed allergies to both sesame and chickpeas.

an allergy can happen at any time unfortunately. And the rash and swelling also disappears by the time we get seen so my recommendation is to next time take pictures of the reaction.

Ask your GP to be referred to the allergy clinic. It may take some time though.
