Hi all.

I'm feeling really defeated and emotional today, I know it shouldn't be about me but I've tried so hard.
My daughter has had hard poos problems since 6 months old. She was put on lactulose and in the end movicol. The movicol was impossible to get in to her and it still seemed to hurt her when she pood.
I removed excess dairy from her diet by reducing cows milk and replacing yoghurt with coconut yoghurt and I gave her a lot of prune juice. After a few days, her poos were soft as ever, no pain and just pure bliss. I thought we turned a corner and we took her off the lactulose (which didn't do much in the first place)
However today and yesterday she had hard poos and was screaming in pain even with the reduced dairy and giving prune juice everyday.

Where have i gone wrong? Is it because I stopped the lactulose even though it didn't help? But I stopped the lactulose days ago.

Have you tried ' cycling ' her legs whilst she is on the floor with her nappy off or there is a certain way to massage tummies that encourage them to go so maybe look that up .

Also try putting some Vaseline or lube on her bum so that might help with the pain in passing one .

You need to go back to the GP for advice. She may need to go back on lactulose and/or the doctor might have other ideas. Do not be fobbed off. Untreated constipation in kids/babies can cause huge issues down the road.

How much is she drinking? Extra fluids are vital and the recent weather won’t have helped.

DS had some hard poops when he started solids and our paediatrician told us to add some oil to his food. He’s 17 months now and we still do it as it helped him greatly.

Is she completely DF now?

My son when a baby was under a paediatrician for constipation and his recommendation was pure orange juice. Worked for us 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here’s some tips I posted on a similar thread a while back:

Ahhh I feel for you, we have just been through this and it’s so hard. This could be my specialist mastermind subject though - are you ready…

  • limit bananas, only give ripe ones
  • no white bread, only brown and only sourdough
  • flaxseed in breakfast
  • high bran cereal from Asda for breakfast - like twice the fibre of bran flakes. You’ll need to grind it in a blender or soak it overnight (we do the ground version, just add milk and microwave in the morning, a bit like ready brek)
  • get a bag of prunes, soak in water, and blitz in blender. Freeze in ice cube trays and add to cereal every morning. The pouches do nothing and are way more expensive.
  • Offer sips of water constantly, at least every 15 minutes, and also make food quite watery eg breakfast
since we’ve been doing these things, my daughter has no issues but we did have problems for months and months from about 8 months - 14 months. Doctor also said when they start moving it helps their digestion so that’s helping too probably. Edit - remembered another one - olive oil in food where possible!

Is she drinking plenty? In this hot weather we definitely need more fluids than usual. My dd is prone to constipation I find adding cashews or nut butters in her diet helps massively. So for her snack she has cashew nuts with dark chocolate and for her breakfast she has homemade Nutella in her oats made with dates, ground hazelnuts or peanut butter, cocoa powder and plant based milk. This has helped stop my daughter withholding which caused her poos to become harder and the vicious cycle has stopped.

Ask your chemist for glycerine suppositories. They do child ones from one year up as well as adult ones. They are the best thing for child constipation.
