Advice after allergic reaction to insect bites in my two-year-old

My daughter (2yrs)has had some gnat bites over the past month or so with the hot weather we're having our windows open.
Unfortunately the bites she's gotten have shown an allergy and have been weepy but as she's only two she's not understanding the no scratching to which has lead to her ripping skin and making them more swollen and more open we have had to resort to big plasters over then when cream applied and dried other wise she digs at them.
The doctor prescribed us with fucidin but didn't really provide me with any advice or diagnosis
Could anyone say what has worked for them or their children?

Is she having regular antihistamine to try to stop the itching?

Mossstitch · Yesterday 21:54

I'm allergic to insect bites which has sometimes led to cellulitis so always watch for spreading redness and heat as would need antibiotics for that. The best cream I've found is by Lanes, tea tree and witch hazel. ( sorry can't do the links, technologically challenged.........ie old🤣) and antihistamines suitable for her age would help♥️

Has she been diagnosed with an allergy? These just look like bites that have been scratched. Might just be me but I don't think they look bad at all.

Is that an allergic reaction?
im 50 and my bites and my kids bites always go like that, I didn’t realise that wasn’t normal. I’ve never been to the doctor to get anything for it. I Just put some of that anthisan on them. Maybe I’m doing it wrong and have just been lucky, but I never realised this was anything to worry about.

Anthisan is the best way to stop bites from itching and the packet says age 2 and above. Get it over the counter in a pharmacy.

the same active ingredient is also in piriton and you could ask a pharmacist if that would also be OK for your child.

I agree. The GP probably didn't give any follow up advice because there isn't really any. The itching will go and they will heal. OP these are normal bites.

I am allergic to a lot of things, when I have a reaction I end up with a swollen limb or tingling lips. My doctor's have always taken it very seriously.

is that an allergy? It looks like an insect bite that’s been scratched, what did the GP say? My insect bites often look like that, especially if it’s a horse fly, they can weep for ages. I use germolene.

Weepy isn’t an allergy. It’s a common reaction to some bites, particularly mosquitoes or horse flies.
An allergy is something else entirely. Some people do have a bigger reaction to bites, this varies from person to person but again isn’t the same as an actual allergy. Those look totally normal for mosquitoes or Horse flies, Antihisan cream will help, always keeping bites clean helps minimise infection risk, Sudocreme or similar is good if they are getting scratched.
A hot teaspoon on the bite for 30 seconds (be v careful with a child, only as warm as they can have without it hurting) can stop the itching as it denatures the toxins.
