Methotrexate experiences? 4 year old with severe atopic dermatitis

My child has had eczema since birth & it has become progressively worse as he gets older, despite the claims he will grow out of it.

Sadly the strongest steroids do not touch him!

We are now on this, protopic & sedation meds for sleep. Our lives have been hellish, especially in this heat, he cannot be outside at all, as he does not sweat he just becomes weak and sick. Poor boy!

Oh poor wee boy that looks so sore. I dont have methotrexate experience sorry. My friends childs skin improved when they worked out he had a dairy intolerance and she also used Zoe Bee Beauty charcoal and oat cream which was amazing. Wishing you and your son the best. This Weathers bloody awful when you have a skin condition

Bless him. We also went through eczema hell but they have grown out of it now ( they are teens). We were on very strong steroids from our derm which many gps didn't want to prescribe but it worked for us.
I do hope someone can help more. I remember those night. :(

I’ve been on methotrexate for some years now. It has been a literal life saver for me. I’ve gone from not sleeping, wanting to tear off my own face but also hardly being able to touch my skin as I was in so much pain. To needing to apply emollient sometimes. That is all.
It isn’t a drug they prescribe lightly. I can have pretty awful side effects. You do need regular blood tests. Every 12 weeks. And a yearly liver scan.
I know it isn’t for everyone. DH was on it for arthritis but it affected his liver and he had to come off.

Have they done any allergy testing? I also found I’m rampantly allergic to MI. Found in liquids. So shower gel. Washing up liquid. Shampoo. Liquid washing detergents. Hand wash.

Thank you, of course I am apprehensive but very hopeful it will take some pain away, it truly impacts his quality of life every second of everyday, and I managed to get DLA for him which is a god send for clothing & hospital appts. Yes, blood tests every 2 weeks for little man for the first few months! Im really hoping side effects are minimum!

My dd finally started on methotrexate aged eleven after years of absolute misery. Infection after infection and just awful full body eczema that nothing helped.

it took around three months to fully take effect but then it simply cleared. She’s almost 19 now and apart from the blood tests (every three months) she’s very happy and has minimal eczema break through. It’s been life changing x

🙄
That is so so helpful isn’t it?? I had patch testing of different allergens. The moment the MI hit my skin it burned and itched. I remarked on it. The person doing the test said they bet it was MI. So many people who have eczema are allergic to it.
It also helped me to find the right emollient. My kids use Dermol. Diprobase works for me.
I have heard of people using (I think) clothing with some kind of silver and a special kind of wet bandaging.
Have they ever hit it with oral steroids for a very short time?

bonkersbongo · 23/06/2026 20:31

Must add she does get nausea for a couple of days after she takes hers. It’s manageable. She’s also takes folic acid everyday except the day she takes her methotrexate to help with the sicky feeling. We tried the weekly injections but she didn’t like them. Her hair thinned slightly initially and she died get more coughs and colds than most people.

My brother has been on methotrexate for years. His eczema was everywhere and often open and weeping. Now he just has some mildly itchy patches on the back of his knees. No side effects. Hope it works as well for your son.
