Eczema - ankles and sandals

Hi all

My daughter struggles with eczema, it is worst
on her ankles. She’s two and I think it’s exacerbated by most things to be honest. We’d switched to bamboo socks but with this weather, I’m not sure socks will help, it seems that heat / sweating really triggers it.

We have had her in crocs but the combination of heat plus sandpit at nursery today is clearly too much and she has come home with a huge flair up/almost bleeding on ankles. I don’t think she’s very good with silicone either from the crocs, it seems.

Any ideas for heatwave-friendly, nursery-friendly, sandpit-friendly solutions?! I was thinking maybe leather sandals instead of synthetic. Anyone know of any brands?

Would just being in bamboo socks work do you think?! We have some but they are quite long annoyingly (cheapest ones I could find) so would bunch up at her ankles and then not be very breathable I guess.

None of the rest of us have eczema so this is completely new to me.

Thank you x

Not a shoes recc but have you tried 'childs farm' bath stuff and cream?

Really sympathetic with this, my son has eczema and his started flaring on the top of his foot when it got warmer. Crocs also make his really bad, but they are so practical!
We have some little sandals from H&M, which I think are better for this, bit more breathable.

Bobux do some brilliant shoes, mostly all leather. They do a quick-dry sandal, but they are just very expensive now, sadly.

It’s like I wrote this message ha. I had some bobux ones for my oldest, they are SO soft. went to look at the price last night and wanted to cry!! Maybe it’s worth it though. 😬

What are your sandals from H&M like, do you mind me asking? Are they leather? I’m thinking natural is the way to go…

Cerave is our go to for cream. Just got some hydromol for the bath as everything else was drying her skin out. I think we need a water softener to be honest. I have tried some Childs farm - she is currently reacting to their suncream 😢

They aren't leather, but they do seem to clean up well - they got very muddy and washed up well! I think its these - https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1269377002.html

Have you tried any of the QV stuff for creams etc? We have their cream & ointment on prescription and we use the bath oil (can't get this on prescription) as we are in a very hard water area (we do have a softener too.. very noticeable when it's run out!)

His dermatologist at GOSH suggested not using sun-screen at all, and rather doing loose cotton clothes & hats etc

Honestly, my child has eczema & we have to stay clear of sandpits! If not 100% cotton knee high socks, also at times wellies.

I’ll take a look at these, thanks.

No I’ve not tried those actually, this is the first I’ve heard. A bath oil sounds good, I will have a look at it thanks :). Cerave has been really good because it has ceramides in I think so it seems to be helping her skin barrier.

I have considered the loose clothing thing. I might have to do this as a back up if it keeps getting worse.

Your little boys eczema must be really quite bad if you’re with GOSH?

Starting to wonder about this tbh. It seems like a recipe for bad skin… gah! She loves it so much. Will try the long socks.

The bath oil is really nice, I was worried it would make him so slippery when we first started, but it doesn't 😁 boots quite often have it on offer.

It could be lots worse, but it started when he was about 3mths (18mths now) and was covering about 90% of his body. Its SO much better now we have the right things to use and can knock flare-ups on the head quickly. The worst places he gets it now is his fingers, chin & arms and legs.
But this heat is brutal for sensitive skin isn't it!
We are very lucky and have health insurance which we were able to use to see the derm at GOSH. We saw one prior to GOSH at our local hospital and he was absolutely useless. But we also have an amazing nurse at our local GPs and she is absolutely fab at prescribing stuff.
