3 year old vulvavaginitis

DD1 is 3.5 and has been having an episode of a sore vagina every night for the last 5 nights. Went to the GP on Monday who thinks it’s vulvavaginitis and prescribed zero derm. We’ve been doing baths with nothing in them, drying the area etc and all day she’s fine. The weird thing is it’s always at 9/9:30pm too like clock work. Usually takes an hour or so to get her back down the. She sleeps through. She’s still in nappies at night though tonight I’ve taken it off and put a puppy pad down. Has anyone found anything that helps? I know I had it too as a little girl but 5 nights in a row feels like a lot!

Threadworms come out at night and can colonise the vagina?

Godrabbit · 16/06/2026 22:30

Check for worms? They're often the cause of a sore vulva.

TallSturdyGirls · 16/06/2026 22:31

Check after she is asleep if she has got worms. My DD and it was awful. They going her vagina and cause intense pain/itching

Lalarara10 · 16/06/2026 22:32

Thanks all - how exactly do I check?

With a torch during the night.

But just treat her with Ovex. It's 2 tablets a week or 2 apart. No need to wait for confirmation

Having no direct experience I googled vulvovaginitis and found this

hope you can find something the helps

Thank you - we did get sent this from our doctor but no mention of nappies in there so wanted to see if anyone had proper experience.

will treat for threadworms just in case but she doesn’t consistently point to the outside

Get some worm treatment from the pharmacy and bung it down her. If it works you will know what it was. I am surprised GP did not suggest this. I had 3 little girls and this was a regular occurence - symptoms exactly as you describe.

The timing is diagnostic.

Iwanttobeafraser · 16/06/2026 23:25

In retrospect, we have wondered if dd's was triggered by what turned out to be a mild lactose intolerance. Night time was usual, post milk.

We found bathing st night with tea tree oil and lavender oil helped. She needed that sort of sterilisation late jn the day.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 16/06/2026 23:30

It definitely sounds like threadworms with that timing in the evening. My DD has had it a few times (thumb sucker!) and with her they always seem to go to her vagina - it’s so uncomfortable for her, really itchy and painful, and makes her vulva really sore. My older DD had threadworms a couple of times too but they never used to go to her vagina.

As already said, treat with Ovex and make sure the whole family has a dose. I find it takes effect quite quickly but may need a second dose a week or so later.

moggerhanger · 16/06/2026 23:33

Absolutely check for threadworms! Or just dose with Ovex anyway. They made my DD cry with pain and we spent weeks treating her for thrush when it wasn't that at all.

Bella1905 · 16/06/2026 23:39

@Lalarara10we are having exactly the same thing!! My 4 year old went through a phase of waking every few nights around 9:30pm crying in discomfort. It seemed to go away but tonight around the same time skes woken crying again in discomfort. I’ve had a look and can’t see any worms but I’m wondering whether to give her the treatment anyway. I wondered if she perhaps wasn’t wiping properly and it was causing irritation.

Mykneeshurt · 16/06/2026 23:49

Classic threadworms.

Bunnyfuller1 · 16/06/2026 23:53

Echoing other posters…threadworms. Had night of eldest saying her sewer was agony, could never get to the bottom of it (pun not initially intended but might as well go with it now. A quick check with a torch and bingo.

User573359 · 17/06/2026 00:00

It's definitely threadworms, my girls had them a few times and it was intense pain in the vagina at night only, not an itchy bum. I never saw them, I just treated and it worked. GP's are ignorant on this. You need worming medication asap as it takes 24 hours to work. In the meantime, piriton can help, and a bath and then vaseline/coconut oil something that helps stop the worms from burrowing 🤢. Good luck.
