Anyone awake? Febrile Convulsions..

Whatdouthink08 · Today 03:06

My daughter just had her 34th febrile seizure an hour ago, she is 3 and a half and had her first one at 10 months.
She had a low grade fever on Sunday morning, Monday evening and last night, no other signs of high temperature at all, and trust me, given the seizure history - we check it constantly 🙈
She had croup on Sunday night/Monday morning and has had typical cold symptoms since. She woke up about 5 minutes before the seizure asking for the toilet in her sleep, I took her temperature then, 38.7!! Minutes later..convulsing.

Guess I’m just looking for a handhold or some company if anyone else is awake at this hour with a poorly child! Not sure how I’ll sleep now, I’m watching her like a hawk and taking her temperature every 5 minutes!

Solidarity to any other parent who has witnessed a febrile convulsion, they never get any less scary, even with all the experience and knowledge we have of them!

I don't know anything about febrile convulsions, but just here to offer a hand hold. You must be shattered!

What's the advice for febrile convulsions? As you're not rushing her to hospital I'm guess isn't your first rodeo and you are looking for warning signs?

I hope your DD is better soon.

Aww, thank you!
No, definitely not our first rodeo unfortunately.
Advice is to call 999 if it is their first seizure, it lasts for >5 minutes, it is their 2nd seizure in 24hrs or any sort of difficulty recovering. I would say though, no one would fault a parent for calling an ambulance/visiting A&E every time! Typically we would, but this seizure was short (a minute and a half) and she recovered really quickly and is sleeping soundly. She’s already had one A&E trip this week for the croup, so thought was best to avoid and keep an eye and will call if she has another.
Will definitely be calling the GP tomorrow though..it’s such a funny pattern for a fever with it completely disappearing through the day and coming back at night! Possibly totally normal though. These poor little ones, they don’t half bring us worry 😅

Are you able to get her temperature down with paracetamol and or ibuprofen at all?

Ragatha · Today 03:27

Don't they just! Mine are teenagers now, but I remember the late nights with poorly DC well.

The worry hasn't stopped though! Just for different things these days!

My last call to 111 was just a couple of days ago as DD hurt her back doing a spontaneous backwards roll off the sofa to avoid her brother tickling her. (She's fine now! But I was worried about her spine when she was up with pain in the night).

Our eldest boy had them consistently. As soon as we saw his temp spiking, administered paracetamol suppositories straight away. Fastest to bring down temps. Life saver for us. It was terrifying to see him struggle. Paralink was the brand.

Sending you a handhold.. not my own but I'm currently at work, looking after other people's poorly children. It sounds like you're doing a grand job, OP
