My son had a temperature Saturday evening and now has a chesty cough and runny rose. This has appeared on his face since the coughing started, it looks like Petechiae and I’ve got myself worried sick. Does this happen to any other kids? He is almost 3

It’s happened to two of my children. One after coughing, one after vomiting.

if you are at all concerned then a and e is the place to be. They don’t mind you coming in with petichae one tiny bit and you will get seen very fast. They can do a blood test after some numbing cream and results can be as quick as an hour

I do think it’s after coughing as he’s still got quite a bad cough! I initially thought it was freckles!!

I still get these as an adult. As a teenager I ended up in A&E because my parents were worried it was meningitis, because the advice used to be "non blanching rash plus fever = meningitis" but actually a lot of these rashes are petechial and so children were getting antibiotics unnecessarily.

Your know your child best. If you are worried, especially if they seem really under the weather, get NHS help. There's a guide here about non-blanching rashes and what to do https://www.kingstonandrichmond.nhs.uk/services/healthcare-professionals/how-refer/paediatric-referrals/non-blanching-rashes-children

Short hand - petechiae are very small, pin prick size. Purpura are bigger. If in doubt, get help.
