Hypermobile 2 year old- nursery

Hi all,

Looking for some advice and apologies for the long post. Ds2 is 27m and walked at 12 months. However he’s always been very clumsy on his feet (I’ve had to put foam lining on all hard surfaces as he will fall into them. In contrast, ds1 didn’t walk until 14 months but could happily run outdoors by 2.

He’s only ever sat in W position and his ankles seem to roll inwards and outwards when he stumbles. In the high chair, he used to swing his shins outwards almost 90 degrees. He’s also started tiptoe walking. Outside, he needs to hold my hand or use backpack reigns as he will fall over often. I take him on walks and to the park daily and swimming 3 times a week but no improvement.

I took him to the GP last week and showed her videos of how he walks and sits. She checked his ankles and said it’s likely hyper mobility. She said he may need physio but after speaking to another gp, said to wait until what the HV says at his 2 year check and bring him back if it doesn’t improve in the following months.

I was have him on the team waiting list to start nursery this September but I’m now starting to worry. Is it unfeasible as he would need one of the workers to hold his hand outdoors (he literally falls every few steps)? Also worry he would hurt himself as most of the ones I’ve viewed seem to have wooden furniture.

Any advice appreciated.

hi! I have no experience with hyper mobility but didn’t want to read and run. Is the HV 2 year check booked? If it’s a while away I would go for a private consult. Perhaps a podiatrist would be a good place to start as he’s struggling to walk. Maybe a change of shoes/inserts would help. Would get info first and then contact nursery to discuss and check what support they can provide.

@Alwayscoffeefirst Thanks for the reply ! I haven’t heard from the HV for his 2 year check, know they’re delayed in our area. Will call them this week.

Will also look into private options. Feel like kicking myself as he only saw the paediatrician last month (who referred him for tonsillectomy due to recurrent tonsillitis). I didn’t mention his clumsiness as had put it down to back to back illnesses but wish I had now. 😫

Ooh yes it would have been convenient to bring it up then! But if you are worrying about it I would definitely try and bring forward the HV appt (hopefully they will book in when you express there is a concern) or go private for the consult, just so you don’t continue to sit with the worry.

I have a friend though who’s 2 year old at the time was wild and would just fall over all the time. I think his mind wanted to go faster than his body would allow. He’s much better now.

I would go back to your GP and ask for a referral to physio and orthotics. Some shoe inserts might improve his stability.

My daughter who has hypermobility and hypotonia as managed fine at nursery without extra support. She does tend to be quite cautious and doesn’t run outside much as she knows she falls down. Her shoe inserts have definitely improved her stability. Also buy him shoes with some ankle support if you are not already and avoid sandals and crocs.
