Advice for my 5 year olds feet!

Hi there,
My 5 year old has a really bad skin on both of his feet. The picture is taken just after the bath so it’s better visible but any advice how to get rid of it the best?
He is barefoot as much as he can because I thought it could be from wearing the socks and shoes all day at school because they get all sweaty.
On the night time I put moisturiser on his feet in a thick layer but maybe there is some more special lotion or cream to use?
I feel so bad they look like this!

Can't see the pic yet, but have you taken him to the GP?
Could it be a fungal skin infection or something?

Oh finally the picture got approved.
No we haven’t been to the GP because I thought it’s “just” dry peeling skin because the weather is warmer and all day in socks and shoes doesn’t help.

I had similar as a child and had to use a steroid cream from the doctors (checked that info with my mum). I did grow out of it by age 10 and have never had it since. I would get a GP appointment if you can

I would show that photo to the pharmacist and ask if it could be athlete's foot.

Superscientist · 27/05/2026 15:33

Do you or your partner struggle with althetes foot? Apparently it's genetic. My partner and I both do andy daughter has started to struggle a bit with it now too. She is also 5, we have been using hibiwash and it's working well on all of our feet.

Cotton socks, breathable footwear and rotate shoes so you aren't wearing the same ones for day after day.

Send pic to gp on e consult

It looks like athletes foot - it’s a fungal infection. You need to get antifungal cream (like canesten) and use it for the full time that the instructions say. Ask a pharmacist if you’re not sure.

It’s very contagious, so don’t share towels etc.

Once it has cleared up, to stop it coming back make sure he takes his socks off as soon as he gets home so his feet aren’t staying sweaty and damp.

It doesn't look like athletes foot to me. Is it between his toes? Is it painful?

I'd try the pharmacist first (as easiest), then GP if pharmacist can't help, and if all else fails a private chiropodist

Take to GP.

Radox foot soak for 10 minutes and exfoliate with a ped egg.

Then mosturise when dry

Send the photo to your gp via e consult, it’s the sort of thing that its perfect for. The gp will either then ask you to come in with your ds, send a prescription to your local pharmacy or tell you to buy a certain otc medication. To me the foot looks like he got wet socks and stayed in them for a good while, my feet do that if left wet

Just to reassure you, my feet used to be like that in the summer when I was a kid. Usually worse when I’d spent a lot of time barefoot. I took great delight in picking it off! It’s worth getting it looked at a pharmacist or GP but mine just resolved itself

urghhh47 · 27/05/2026 20:22

This looks like moccasin athletes foot to me. Need treating with antifungal cream - I would definitely get to the GP asap to get it checked out in case they think it's a different skin infection on his feet.

Myheadisgoingtoexplodeagain · 27/05/2026 20:41

Has he been unwell recently with covid type symptoms or scarlet fever?

mdinbc · 27/05/2026 20:54

My granddaughter had this. It could be fungal, or it could be Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis. It can be caused by sweaty feet. Make sure her shoes are breathable, and use cotton or bamboo socks. If possible, change out her shoes every other day so they get a good chance to air out.

Slather her feet with a good vaseline based cream at night, put on cotton socks so it gets a chance to soak in. For summer, socks and sandals. So many children's shoes now are make of non-breathable material. No jelly shoes or similar!
