Vomiting, fever and no diarrhoea in child, could it still be viral?

My DS has been poorly since Friday.

He vomited a couple of times Friday evening and had a fever.
Saturday, rang 111 told it's viral. very lethargic high temperature, slept most of the day.
In the last few hours more vomiting, bringing up bile..
Not given Calpol since Friday, Ds refuses.
No diarrhoea.
What is it? I'm monitoring for dehydration, but last few hours can't seen to keep the fluid in.

Is it really a virus that doesn't cause diarrhoea?

Yes it absolutely can be. Some kids are more prone to it going one end or the other. Keep giving small amounts of fluid and keep an eye generally.

I would get checked out for things like tonsillitis if still have a fever. That can cause vomiting as well.

When my DC have had sickness bugs they’ve never once had diarrhoea - it’s far from a given.

If he can’t keep fluid down though, especially if you’re somewhere where it’s hot today, I’d call 111 back. But maybe also google the fluid challenge thing they might do in A&E anyway - I think it’s like a couple of teaspoons of water every 10 mins or so to see if they can keep that level of fluid down.

I’d be getting him checked again tbh, especially if he’s now vomiting bile and can’t keep fluids down. Viral illnesses absolutely can happen without diarrhoea, but lethargy, high temp for days and ongoing vomiting would make me want a clinician to reassess him.

Keep an eye on dehydration signs.. not peeing much, dry lips/mouth, no tears, floppy/difficult to wake. Small sips very frequently is usually better than bigger drinks.

Personally I’d ring 111 again tonight and update them that he’s now bringing up bile and struggling to keep fluids in.

Thank you all, we did end up ringing 111 again. Turns out it's his tonsils again! Like third time in a year!

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I was just about to say tonsils!! Strep is around locally here so watch out for those symptoms as it needs abx

He's so poorly bless him. They won't give us medication this time. We have to ride it out.
He's still trying to be sick but there nothing in his tummy as he's not eating.

I was going to say tonsils too, very much like when my DS gets it and the first time it really threw me

They won’t give you medication? I would be going back to get another doctors opinion if he’s still poorly. If it’s strep a causing the infection then he needs 10 days of antibiotics (pen v) to get rid of it. You can ask gp to do a swab to see if it’s strep a or buy a rapid test from Tesco.
