Is three weeks enough before swimming after a child’s circumcision?

Hi there, my son is nine and the day before his 10th birthday he will be getting a circumcision due to medical reasons. Problem is we are due to go on holiday exactly 3 weeks later to Agadir. He is a real water Baby and will want to be in the pool 90% of the time. Is three weeks enough time for him to be healed and to be able to go in the pool, from people’s experience? Obviously, I’ve googled it and the information is quite mixed. Some places it says 1 to 2 weeks. Some say 2 to 4 and some says 5 to 6 weeks before swimming so I really don’t know what to do. My thoughts are to delay the holiday by a couple of weeks, but obviously this is going to incur extra costs and the holiday was very expensive in the first place. But I definitely will not be delaying the surgery. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I wouldn't swim that soon after surgery as the pool water is a haven of bacteria!

Please speak to the medical team. Some trusts say it’s fine after two weeks, some trusts advise 4-6 weeks.
It will also depend on if there is any post op infection.

Seek medical advice on this rather than Mumsnet advice

If it’s well heeled it should be fine. The tissue in that area is very similar to the mouth and heels very quickly.

I had this done as an adult, they recommended not swimming for 6 weeks. But I echo other posters in saying talk to the professionals rather than getting advice from Mumsnet.

I've not long had a small surgery and the incision points still hadn't managed to heal or the stitches (the type that dissolve on their own) drop out by that point. I really wouldn't let him go in a swimming pool.

Is there any chance you can reschedule it until after your holiday? My son had to be circumcised at a similar age and had a very difficult recovery.

Thanks. I don’t want to reschedule it as his symptoms seem to be progressing very quickly and I’d be concerned about him being away if he needed emergency attention. I really don’t want to delay. If anything I’ll delay the holiday.

Thanks for the replies. I think what most of you have said has confirmed what I’ve been thinking that three weeks really isn’t long enough for him to enjoy his holiday. So I either need to try to get a cancellation and get it done sooner or move the holiday. I just don’t want to disappoint a couple of people who we’re going away with (they think I am worrying too much) but if we have to, we have to and I can’t compromise my son’s recovery. Him going on holiday where he won’t be able to swim would be completely pointless. I will of course take the advice of a professional but I think it’s just my friend’s reaction that’s making me think. Really, I wanted to get the consensus of opinions.
