11 month old refusing solids after nursery bugs and chest infection

Hi there,

DS (11 months) started nursery a month ago and has since been ill with back to back colds/viruses/chest infection. This most recent one has been exceptionally horrid, and led to a trip to the OOA GP at midnight last night - cleared of anything sinister, just managing at home.

DS has been refusing most solid food since Monday - taking some breastmilk and formula. The GP didn’t seem that worried about it. He’s normally a really good eater - three meals a day and generally very interested in trying any food that’s around.

hes obviously got no appetite for it because he’s been unwell and feverish, but is just seems a long time.

has anyone had this and how long did it take for your child to get back to normal eating? Are there any good foods to try offering him as he recovers?

This is really normal. Little children regress when they are ill and you just have to go back to treating them as if they are younger until they gradually catch up. It may take days or weeks. As long as he is taking enough milk and gradually increasing solids it is fine. At under a year, milk is still the most important nourishment.

Give any foods with lots of calories he’s willing to eat / even if that means ice cream, smoothies, and custard and things like that.

think about what would you like to eat if you were feeling rubbish and give that

get the calories in and his energy will go up and that will make him feel better and improve his appetite

Milk is still his main food. Just keep offering solids little and often. He will most likely perk up and eat.

sounds normal
baby will be back to normal soon
if baby didn't take any milk I would be worried, but it's good nutrition until they beel better.

the first few months in nursery is really tough on children and parents, but once you are through that it will be a lot better
