my 7 month old has eczema come out all over her body. She has had it on and off since newborn but it’s weeping etc now and it’s tough. I saw a dermatologist who has a plan for us. If it doesn’t work we are going to explore allergies.

im wondering those of you whose children had infant eczema how they did as they got older? I’m really worried that this is going to be crippling for her long term.

thanks (a very worried mum)

I had bad eczema as a baby/young child. It improved a lot as I got older. I switched from using the thick petroleum emollient types of creams to thinner creams as a teenager and my skin improved immeasurably with that and I stopped needing steroid creams nearly so often. I'm really not convinced by the advice to smother skin in thick emollients.

As a young adult I realised I was very mildly allergic to soya. Removing it from my diet saw my skin drastically improve almost instantly.

As an adult I use Aveeno skin relief after every shower and as long as I do that you wouldn't know that I had eczema. As a child it was bad but I dealt with it as it was my normal that I was used to. When I look back I am impressed with my childhood self for being so stoic dealing with how sore it was!

My child had it quite bad in creases in arms, legs and back of knees , cheeks when teething age
I went and got aveeno one night applied it to the back and woke to nappy change in the morning it was red raw..scared me. After that prescription only creams and lotions...i have nothing against these products but the skin was so bad I was uncertain what ingredient cuased the worse reaction.
As they aged it decreased
This year it has flared up in the teen years with im guessing diet and teen skin care products not so excema friendly..difficult to explain to a teen some products arent to good, so use the plain or ordinary body wash etc.
We also only had natural fibre clothes...now uniforms are polyester..yuck.
