10 month old with a really bad rash! Any idea what it looks like/ could be and desperate for some home remedies.

I will be taking her to see a doctor urgently tomorrow but today her skin is extremely bad and in need of something to soothe it. She has been to the doctors twice already, both times prescribed 2 different steroid creams and a bottle of Dermol, I have tried Oat baths, coconut oil, drying the area fully after a bath and using a organic talc with no harsh chemicals, not using soap when washing her but nothing is working and I am so scared to use anything else in case it makes it worse.

Both times the doctors didn’t even say what it was just that it was infected and gave me the steroid creams but I need to know what it is in order to treat it. Does anyone here recognise what this could be and what I could do in the meantime until tomorrow. It looks so sore bless her! She is still her happy self, eating and drinking but I just know it’s uncomfortable for her. Thanks in advance for any help/ suggestions.

It does look like eczema to me.
I went through a stage with DD where I had to just use mild unperfumed soap to wash her, including hair.
Also completely fragrance free laundry powder and no fabric conditioner.
Aveeno oat moisturiser worked best for her but we had to try a few different things

@Jujubeans1984thank you, going by the photos it does look like eczema for sure and as per @user2848502016 has also stated it looks like eczema.
I do think washing her clothes separately with a fragrance free softener and gel would help massively! Especially as she get this rash round the back of her neck which is most likely from the collar of her clothes. Does it just go over time? I hope she isn’t stuck like this forever :(
I will also try the aveeno oat moisturiser. Thank you!

Yes my DD grew out of it around age 8, we were really careful with perfumed products until then.
She still has quite sensitive skin but can tolerate normal laundry powder and bubble bath now

Do the steroids work? How often did you apply them? As they’re the thing to get the inflammation under control. Also you can’t over moisturise but not at the same time as using steroid creams.

I ended up taking my DS to a dermatologist who obviously had so much more knowledge than the GP. Turned out it was a cows milks allergy which with the correct cream regime I got under control really quickly.

It’s not recommended in babies but when we have had strange fungal or welting looking rashes we used Savlon as a last resort. Never failed us.

Also cut everything else; so minimal baths, no products or creams. Just water, and Savlon.

I'm wondering if it's a fungal infection. Steroids can promote an overgrowth of yeast type infections on the skin, almost like athletes foot. But I'm not sure what treatment would be safe in such a young child. I'd ask the GP about it though. My husband gets it on his face because he needs steroids for execma on his hands, but then touches either side of his nose Which prompts two red raw patches there.

Can you not get her seen by a doctor today?

Boriswentcamping · 10/05/2026 15:39

ouch, I’m not a doctor but it looks like eczema to me and it looks quite angry. Watch for the redness spreading and any hotness in the skin around or any signs of being generally unwell. I would keep taking some photographs to monitor it. I could be wrong but I thought steroid creams were more to treat inflammation rather than infection which would require antibiotic cream, or potentially oral antibiotics? I would definately go back to the gp tomorrow but if you think it is getting infected in the meantime or she becomes unwell ring 111. For eczema general advice is to keep it cool, use the steroids as they instructed and lots of unperfumed emollients both for washing as a soap substitute and also after washing as a moisturiser. The eczema society has some good into as does the bda - British dermatology association. I would be wary of any home remedies as they may make things worse. I would skip the talc and the coconut oils. Make sure you extra rinse clothes and beddings to make sure there is no residue. Poor little thing, it does look sore. Is it itchy? My daughter has eczema which can flare similarly in the creases of her skin. we haven’t yet found the trigger but she is older - the emolients do help. Definitely seek another opinion as you want to get on top of it. Have they given an emollient? Something like epaderm which doesn’t have any preservatives?

Boriswentcamping · 10/05/2026 15:41

Also perhaps google cellulitis to make sure you know what infected skin looks like - not nice, but essential to know so you can treat quickly

Imisscoffee2021 · 10/05/2026 15:42

Coconut oil I found never helped rashes, emollient is your friend til its properly diagnosed and cream prescribed.
