Going mad now, what could be causing this awful rash on 6 month old. With photo

I’m here because I’m giving up with the GP.

my 6 month old has always had eczema and was suspected cmpa as a newborn but eventually she settled on aptamil anti reflux and was fine until we have started weaning.

she has had patches on her elbow and chest that get sore and weep. Steroid cream healed them but soon as stopped it’s back. She also is getting a rash all over her body that isn’t like eczema. More like bumps/ hives. We’ve changed her to cmpa milk and no dairy and it’s still coming up. It does seem to have got worse since she started teething and we have been giving her calpol and ashtons teething powders. The gp just shrugs at me and give her cream but doesn’t understand I have to see her trying to scratch herself face off constantly and cry 😣 can anyone help with what this might be. Ive tried every single thing you can think of for the eczema but nothing gets rid. I now keep reading horror stories about babies with severe allergies that aren’t noticed until it’s too late but I don’t know what it is

Have you tried this? Suitable from birth and for eczema. Read the reviews.
Cleared up a persistent rash on my adult DD’s face when creams from the Pharmacy and those prescribed by GP didn’t.

Have you tried changing your washing powder? Dh gets a similar rash when I use certain brands.

It definitely looks like an allergy to something.

MissMoneyFairy · 03/05/2026 14:25

I'd speak to your paediatrician or specialist dermatologist, what else have you tried.

MissMoneyFairy · 03/05/2026 14:26

Who diagnosed eczema, what do you wash her with and wash clothes and bedding with.

Lolamorte · 03/05/2026 14:31

If it’s a sensitivity to chemicals used in washing, it can be easy to eliminate these. I stopped using chemical cleaners (kitchen, bathroom, floors etc) and soap (laundry detergent, body wash), limiting everything to just plain water and a bar of soap for hand hygiene for a few months , and my ds’s skin cleared up. So did my husband’s, and he’d been an itchy scratchy flaky type forever!

TFImBackIn · 03/05/2026 14:33

If your doctor isn't referring you to a dermatologist for this, you need a different doctor. Your poor baby - it looks so sore.

hopspot · 03/05/2026 14:38

My suggestion is that your baby has another allergy. My dc was like this when he started weaning and it turns out although we knew he was allergic to milk he was also allergic to egg. I would start doing a food diary.

MissMoneyFairy · 03/05/2026 14:43

She needs to see a paediatrician and a paediatric allergist, if the GP isn't helping can you afford to go private.

Funkylights · 03/05/2026 15:42

Avoid bio washing powder

LoremIpsumCici · 03/05/2026 15:46

I agree definitely another allergy going on and it’s quite bad such that even after you eliminate the right allergen, it will take days to a week for her immune response to calm down. I have you tried any antihistamines?

I’ve always used fairy non-bio. But now thinking about it her eczema is in all the places where there is constant rubbing or contact with clothes, even one side of her face where she always sleeps on that side. I’ve looked it up and going to try washing everything water only and double rinsing just to see if it makes a difference. What detergent did you use to clear it up? Thank you

I’ve tried the emollient that was prescribed by gp. Tried this once a day all the way up to every nappy change. Hydrocortisone 1% cream on bad spots (worked a bit but seemed to stop working). Pure coconut oil, welleda, child’s farm, aveeno, dove baby hypoallergenic lotion (this seemed to help great at keeping skin calm only once it was healed though), this was all over the course of 4 months. we’ve also tried bathing every other day, trying to bath hardly at all, salt baths, oat baths.

When we started weaning is when her two worst patches flared so much they started weeping through her clothes. The nurse put her on antibiotics saying it was infected but it wasn’t and they didn’t do anything other than upset her gut. She then told me to keep using moisturiser which done nothing. She then prescribed Timodene which cleared those two spots up within days and they healed. But then since this back rash has appeared the weeping has come back.

I saw her doctor at the hospital (she has a separate unrelated condition) and told him about this all and he suspects it is cmpa as she did get a rash on her back within an hour of eating a yoghurt and he’s given us the aptamil Pepti 1, problem is she hates it and it’s been difficult to wean completely onto it. I’ve also given her prebiotic drops for a long time.

we can’t afford to see someone privately but I’m beginning to think I will have to find the money

I use bare min washing powder & agree double rinse etc. I don’t care if stuff is stained

Hello, the gp and nurse diagnosed eczema. But sometimes I wonder if it really is because it’s rarely scaly. It just appears as red marks that then start weeping. I wash it with fairy non bio but I’m going to start washing just in water and double rinse to see it if changes things

So is it a dairy allergy?

When my DD had similar it was CMPA, egg allergy, dog and cat allergy and irritation from detergent/soap/shampoo/suncream. We used Surecare detergent and did extra rinses. You really need to get to the bottom of what is causing it, GP should be helping access the correct care.

Funkylights · 03/05/2026 20:17

Cmpa - a friends baby had this. If milk got onto her skin she’s get hives where she’d been touched with it within minutes

Thank you, yes my gp said that it isn’t serious enough it is just eczema and if it was an allergy she would have anaphylaxis 😣 ridiculous. Luckily her consultant at the hospital agreed to refer me to an allergist which has a dietician attached. I’m not sure how long the wait will be though. Can’t come soon enough

Id try ecover or surcare and double rinse too.

Moo goo excess cream is my suggestion too. Looks sore.

Thank you. How long did it take to clear up after exposure? I haven’t given her anything but vegetables and her formula for a few days now and it doesn’t seem to be shifting. I had been giving her things like rusks, porridge etc before.

God don't use fairy. Use something like ecover zero. Rewash EVERYTHING on a hot wash to get rid of build up on clothes. Get a referral to dermatologist. You will need to push for it, GPs like to think they can solve eczema by chucking creams at you but you need a specialist.

Your poor DD. It may be the other ingredients in the washing powder like fragrances that are causing the reaction. Try Ecover zero washing liquid, use a minimal amount and do an extra rinse.

AllICanBe · 03/05/2026 20:21

Are the teething powders dairy free? My child had CMPA and I didn’t think they could have the teething powders.

IckyIck · 03/05/2026 20:21

Eczema is just 'non-specific dermatitis'. Not dismissing your DD's rash but pointing out that it doesn't tell you much.

My first thought was egg allergy or contact dermatitis. I'm not a medical person.

I'd try washing the clothes without detergent.

Get a second opinion.
