8 month old with severe chickenpox spots, has anyone had similar?

My 8 month old dd has caught chicken pox from her older brother. His was really mild but hers seems so much worse. She is pretty much covered all over with spots, including in her ears, around her eyes, and on her genitals. Some look very angry, especially under her chin in the fold between her chin and neck. She's been so unsettled and distressed, was inconsolable after her bath. Waiting for a call back from 111 but just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with their baby and if it led to any complications? Really worried 😟

Mine never had complications, but a bath woth porridge oats helped with the itching.
Fill a sock with porridge oats and hold it under the tap while you run the bath. Bath will go all milky looking. Can then use the sock as a sponge and run on their body.
Hope they are ok!

DD2 was similar at 6 months. I was told it is often worse if they catch it from siblings.
DD1 had less than 50 spots; dd2 had really one spot - it just covered her entirely.

Firstly, yes she was miserable, and the doctor was concerned enough to come out to her a couple of times because she had spots in her mouth, so they thought it might be inside too.
However it was really a care of waiting it out. Lots of drinking (in her case breast milk was the best), aveno in the bath and leaving her naked as much as possible, which was difficult as she was crawling so she rubbed scars off on the carpet.
However she's now in her 20s and she has one small scar above an eyebrow. She only found out why it was there a few weeks ago when I mentioned it and she says no one has ever commented.

Mine needed hospital admission. See your GP.

You need to see a medical professional as soon as possible

Do not give ibuprofen.

mine was 9 months and a bit like this. She was ok after a week. Didn’t need any other interventions.

definitely get her checked as she’s young

Yes my DD caught it at 10 months and it was like the worst bit under your DD’s neck all over her body. I had assumed an oat bath was an old wives tales but it really worked.
She didn’t need any medical treatment (although I did get her seen by a GP to make sure), but definitely worth checking if you think any look infected or she seems particularly unwell.
She’s 4 now, no scars.

You probably already know, but don’t give ibuprofen.

Mine looked like this at the same age. We didn’t take him to a doctor, it passed on its own but lots of oat baths, cuddles, plenty of milk.

My DS caught hand foot and mouth at this age which the gp initially thought was chicken pox. He prescribed piriton and we used lots of oat baths as well as a lotion called poxclin which was really good. The doctor said they don’t really recommend calamine lotion these days.

I could have written this myself a few months ago. 8 month old caught it from older sibling who breezed through it. Baby was covered head to toe, he had a dry, possible fungal rash latch of skin on his neck folds that had been problematic prior to chicken pox, this part seemed to just be an entire cluster of spots on there which looked awful. We used poxclin mousse which seemed to help soothe it and within a week, he had scabbed over. 4 months on, you can still see where some of the worst blisters were when he’s been in the bath or when there’s a temp change but he has come off quite unscathed when it comes to scarring. I thought he’d have a few scars with how bad he looked. Definitely seek help if you are worried but hopefully it will pass quickly and with minimal scarring. I hope it clears up soon.

Thanks for all your replies. It's been a really tiring few days. Went to A&E Saturday night after being sent by 111 as her spots looked worse and she was trembling. Dr there advised no infection and keep monitoring. Then again last night after she started projectile vomiting and had liquid diarrhoea at midnight and couldn't keep fluid down. Her fever finally came down today and she's suddenly improved lots, even smiling. Just keeping an eye on her spots to make sure no infection develops. Really hope none of them scar. Tried Aveeno oat bath soak tonight and she was much better after.

My 3yo was very similar- it was horrendous and days of really high temperatures. 3 years on and you wouldn’t know- only one very slight scar on her back. Oat baths were really soothing. Hopefully she’ll be feeling better soon
